Role Overview
We are seeking Prisoner Custody Officers (PCOs) to join the Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS) team at Chatham Magistrates Court located in ME4 4JZ. In this role, you will contribute critically to maintaining safety and security throughout the justice process. The position offers job stability and a structured salary progression starting at £24,596 for a 35-hour workweek, increasing to £25,555 from September 1st, 2026, with further annual increments up to £27,180 by year four.
The service operates 24 hours a day, six days a week covering early and late shifts. Flexibility is essential as shifts and finishing times can vary and sometimes require working beyond scheduled hours. Shift schedules are planned 12 weeks ahead to aid personal planning. Part-time options may be available but only for full days, not reduced daily hours.
Key Duties
- Accompanying detainees within court premises, including transferring them to courtrooms, cells, and facilities.
- Supervising detainees during court hearings to ensure safety and security.
- Handling sensitive situations with strict confidentiality.
- Providing welfare support to detainees, such as facilitating access to food, drink, and wellbeing checks.
- Monitoring detainee behavior and responding appropriately to incidents or risks.
- Carrying out security searches to maintain a safe environment.
- Maintaining accurate records and documentation.
- Collaborating effectively with court personnel and partner agencies to ensure smooth operations.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants from varied backgrounds are welcome, provided they are dedicated to making a positive impact. A paid 5½-week training program will equip new hires with necessary skills and ongoing support from experienced staff is provided. Prerequisites for this role include:
- Possession of a full UK driving license (B/B1) is preferred but not mandatory.

- Ability to remain composed and make informed decisions under pressure.
- Confidence in managing behaviors and employing conflict de-escalation techniques.
