About the role
Dorotheum is a major auction house with a long history, a strong position in the German-speaking market, and a broad presence across Central Europe. The company runs roughly 700 auctions each year across more than 40 categories, supported by a team of over 100 specialists. This role sits within the Old Masters/Fine Arts area and is based at one of the company’s European locations.
Key responsibilities
- Bring in valuable consignments for auctions, look after established clients, and develop new relationships.
- Assess artworks independently, both remotely and in person, and help organise high-profile valuation days, including at international branch locations.
- Research, catalogue, and write accurate scholarly descriptions, including detailed condition reports in English.
- Support the planning, preparation, and delivery of auctions.
- Track developments in the international art market and contribute to the growth of the Fine Art department.
Requirements
- A degree in Art History focused on European painting from the 15th to the 18th century, or an equivalent strong academic background.
- Proven experience in the international art market, ideally in an auction house, gallery, or premium art dealership.
- Solid expertise in Old Master paintings.
- A self-driven approach, strong ownership, goal orientation, and the ability to collaborate well in a team.
- Strong client-service orientation, business development ability, and a polished, discreet manner with buyers and consignors.
- Fluency in English is required; Italian and German are beneficial.
- Comfort with standard IT tools and a valid Class B driving licence.
