Job description

About the role

Dorotheum is a major auction house with a long history, a strong position in the German-speaking market, and a broad presence across Central Europe. The company runs roughly 700 auctions each year across more than 40 categories, supported by a team of over 100 specialists. This role sits within the Old Masters/Fine Arts area and is based at one of the company’s European locations.

Key responsibilities

  • Bring in valuable consignments for auctions, look after established clients, and develop new relationships.
  • Assess artworks independently, both remotely and in person, and help organise high-profile valuation days, including at international branch locations.
  • Research, catalogue, and write accurate scholarly descriptions, including detailed condition reports in English.
  • Support the planning, preparation, and delivery of auctions.
  • Track developments in the international art market and contribute to the growth of the Fine Art department.

Requirements

  • A degree in Art History focused on European painting from the 15th to the 18th century, or an equivalent strong academic background.
  • Proven experience in the international art market, ideally in an auction house, gallery, or premium art dealership.
  • Solid expertise in Old Master paintings.
  • A self-driven approach, strong ownership, goal orientation, and the ability to collaborate well in a team.
  • Strong client-service orientation, business development ability, and a polished, discreet manner with buyers and consignors.
  • Fluency in English is required; Italian and German are beneficial.
  • Comfort with standard IT tools and a valid Class B driving licence.

What’s offered

  • An international workplace with a strong artistic focus.
  • Flexible working hours from Monday to Friday.
  • Varied work content, a broad network of contacts, and interesting meetings.
  • A centrally located workplace with good transport access.
