Job description

About Oranga Tamariki

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is dedicated to placing tamariki and rangatahi at the centre of its work. The organisation is guided by a set of core values: putting children first, recognising the importance of aroha, respecting the mana of people, acting with integrity and truth, valuing whakapapa, and understanding that oranga is an ongoing journey.

The ministry is committed to making New Zealand the best place in the world for children and to working alongside hapū, iwi, and Māori organisations to identify the right solutions for children and young people who need support.

About the role

This fixed-term, full-time Youth Justice Social Worker position is based in Manurewa and runs until June 2027. The role focuses on supporting tamariki and rangatahi who have offended, or are alleged to have offended, by helping them access a pathway that encourages change without leading to a criminal record.

You will work closely with rangatahi, their whānau, police, youth advocates, and community and government support services to understand and address the underlying causes of offending as early as possible. The aim is to reduce the risk of continued offending and support better long-term outcomes for young people and their families.

What you will bring

The ideal candidate will be motivated to work with youth, build strong connections, and develop trusting relationships that help create positive outcomes for rangatahi.

You will need to bring professional social work credentials, strong communication skills, a culturally responsive approach, and a sound understanding of youth justice and child protection practice.

Remuneration and benefits

The salary range for this role starts at $81,206 and goes up to $97,557, depending on experience. Pay progression may occur annually based on tenure. The organisation also offers a supportive team environment, flexible work arrangements, wellbeing-focused support, and opportunities for training and professional growth.

Application and additional information

Applicants are expected to submit a CV and cover letter. Current Oranga Tamariki employees should apply using their Oranga Tamariki email login. The application deadline is midnight on 13 July 2026.

Candidates should be familiar with the organisation’s code of conduct, which includes the expectation that staff come to work free from the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
