Job description
Position overview
Marburg University is seeking a full-time, permanent research associate at the Institute of Political Science within the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy. The role is centered mainly on teaching, with the appointment available as soon as possible. Classification is offered at pay grade E 13 under the Hessen public sector agreement, and an appointment as a civil servant at grade A 13 may be considered during the hiring process.
The university, founded in 1527, teaches around 22,000 students and is known for its award-winning teaching and broad-based research on major contemporary issues.
Key duties
The successful candidate will deliver methods teaching in BA and MA political science programs and related degree courses, covering 14 semester hours per week. The role also includes developing and updating methods-based courses and examinations, supervising student theses and papers, and contributing to research on digital democracy, party politics, participation, and digital transformation.
Further work involves designing and running surveys, processing, analyzing, and documenting quantitative data, and applying statistical modeling in R/RStudio, especially regression analysis, visualization, and group comparisons. Participation in research projects and third-party funding initiatives is also expected.
Required profile
Applicants should bring strong knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods, with particular experience in survey research, panel analysis, text analysis, and automated analytical approaches. Confident use of R/RStudio and common R packages for data preparation, analysis, and visualization is essential. Experience with statistical modeling, especially different types of regression models, is also required.
The position calls for research interests in digital democracy research, party research, participation, and the digital transformation of these fields. Very good German and English skills are needed, along with enthusiasm for teaching at university level, teamwork, and a willingness to contribute to academic self-governance.
