Wildlife Biologist II

About the Opportunity

Copperhead Environmental Consulting is actively expanding its team and looking for a Wildlife Biologist II who aspires to build a long-term career within the environmental consulting sector. Candidates should be interested in diversifying their expertise across various company projects.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position primarily focused on a long-term project with opportunities to engage in additional assignments during interim periods and thereafter. The role is based at the headquarters in Paint Lick, Kentucky, but may also be offered as a hybrid position in Asheville, North Carolina.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage tasks including preparation of biological assessments, evaluations, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, and survey reports.
• Assess projects for compliance with the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and NEPA, determine design features, and evaluate impacts on species and their habitats.
• Conduct diverse biological surveys—covering bats, birds, insects, fish, mussels, plants, and wetlands—and analyze collected data.
• Support proposal development and scope projects effectively.
• Engage in client communications through calls and face-to-face meetings.
• Collect and analyze field data accurately.
• Maintain field data integrity and specimen care.
• Ensure proper upkeep, preparation, and decontamination of equipment and vehicles.
• Travel when necessary for meetings, fieldwork, and project-related needs.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in biology or a closely related discipline.
• Between 4 and 6 years of advancing experience in biological surveys and natural resource management.
• Strong communication skills and experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams of planners and resource professionals.
• Proficient technical writing abilities.
• Capability to advocate for Copperhead's services both within and outside the organization.
• Preferred: strong wildlife and plant identification skills and possession of applicable US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) or state survey permits.
• Top consideration for candidates experienced in avian surveys.
• Knowledge of wildlife species and habitats specific to the Southern Appalachian region is advantageous.
• Ability to independently take initiative, troubleshoot effectively, and ensure safe and efficient task completion.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Certifications such as OSHA 10 or 30, First Aid/CPR/AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens are beneficial; if not already certified, these will be provided after hire, and maintaining these certifications is required.
