Job description

Role overview

Mott MacDonald New Zealand is hiring a Water Technician to support its specialist water utility monitoring team in Auckland. The role contributes to wastewater and water network monitoring projects that deliver practical value to communities throughout Aotearoa and help improve social outcomes.

This is a mostly outdoor, hands-on position where each day can look different. You will be involved in installing and maintaining flow, level, and data logging equipment across a range of sites, including wastewater manholes, stormwater pipelines, treatment facilities, and above-ground instrument enclosures. The work suits someone with a practical mindset, a willingness to work in messy environments, and an interest in solving technical problems that affect public health and the environment.

The monitoring work supports major infrastructure improvements and provides live data used for water quality checks, network performance tracking, and environmental compliance. You will join a compact, high-performing team known for delivering strong results, with safety and wellbeing treated as core priorities whether you work alone or with colleagues.

Key responsibilities

  • Set up, maintain, and service flow, level, and logging equipment across wastewater and stormwater systems
  • Carry out work in confined and technical environments such as manholes, pipe networks, treatment plants, and instrument cabinets
  • Complete field assignments, including occasional night work, while following strict safety practices
  • Review monitoring outputs and confirm that data is accurate and equipment is functioning properly
  • Plan and perform maintenance tasks across several locations
  • Study data patterns and share observations with engineers, scientists, and managers
  • Support live monitoring initiatives that back infrastructure upgrades and regulatory compliance

About you

  • You are practical, safety-focused, and comfortable working in confined spaces such as manholes
  • You are physically capable and able to pass a full medical assessment
  • You hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence and have the legal right to work in New Zealand
  • You are at ease working around wastewater and in active field environments
  • Experience in plumbing, drainlaying, construction, or general contracting would be an advantage, though it is not mandatory
  • You can use basic Word and Excel functions
  • You are open to flexible hours, including occasional night shifts
  • You are keen to learn, develop, and contribute to a purpose-led team

What Mott MacDonald offers

  • Employee-owned structure with a model that shares success and empowers staff
  • Competitive pay along with enhanced KiwiSaver contributions
  • Discretionary group and individual performance bonuses for eligible employees
  • Training, development, and career progression opportunities
  • A supportive and inclusive workplace culture that values diversity and wellbeing
  • Meaningful projects that deliver social and environmental benefits
  • A collaborative team environment built on achievement, integrity, and teamwork
