Job description
Role overview
Mott MacDonald is looking for a Civil Engineer to join its Water Utilities team in Ireland, with opportunities based in Dublin or Cork. This is a permanent, full-time position focused on delivering work across the water and wastewater sector.
You will become part of a collaborative, employee-owned global consultancy with a strong presence across multiple countries and offices. The role offers the chance to contribute to work that supports communities, protects the environment, and improves water and wastewater services for the future.
About the division
The Water Utilities Division serves as a centre of excellence for tackling Ireland and the UK’s water and wastewater challenges. The team works across the full project lifecycle, from early advisory work and feasibility through to outline and detailed design, delivering technically strong solutions for clients while creating varied and stimulating opportunities for employees.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will work within agile Ireland and UK resource teams to carry out investigations and design activities across all stages of water and wastewater scheme development. You will collaborate with experienced specialists to deliver practical, innovative outcomes for clients.
- Contribute to a wide range of water sector projects and frameworks in Ireland and the UK.
- Support investigations, planning, design, and delivery across water and wastewater schemes.
- Work with project teams on assignments ranging from master planning through to detailed design and commissioning.
- Help ensure technical quality, commercial performance, and client-focused delivery.
- Provide support and mentoring to graduate engineers where appropriate.
Candidate profile
The company is seeking candidates with a civil engineering background or another closely related qualification. Applicants should be working towards Chartered Engineer status through Engineers Ireland or an equivalent body.
A solid understanding of designer responsibilities under PSDP regulations is required, along with practical knowledge of water or wastewater specifications and design standards. Strong communication and teamwork skills are important, as the role involves working in a dynamic team environment and contributing to the development of graduate engineers.
Experience with Irish or UK water utility clients and prescribed bodies is desirable, as is strong digital capability using tools such as Copilot or other AI tools, AutoCAD, Civils 3D, GIS, and SharePoint. The ability to travel to sites across Ireland is also desirable.
Why join Mott MacDonald
This opportunity sits within an award-winning team that delivers meaningful work for major water utility clients. The role provides access to diverse projects, a collaborative culture, and clear progression routes, including support toward Chartership and beyond.
Mott MacDonald places strong emphasis on learning, professional development, and employee ownership. The organisation has a long-standing history in Ireland and continues to grow its water sector capability through framework appointments secured through 2030 and beyond.
Working approach and inclusion
The company supports an agile way of working, giving managers and employees flexibility to balance client, team, and personal commitments. A hybrid working policy is mentioned in the source, though the role itself is based onsite in Cork or Dublin.
Mott MacDonald states that it is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and encourages applicants from all backgrounds. Support is available during the recruitment process for candidates who need reasonable adjustments.
