About the Role
The Naval Service is the primary maritime defense body of the state, tasked with diverse operational and defense duties at sea. We are recruiting qualified individuals for the role of Direct Entry Operations Branch Officer. This leadership position involves significant responsibility in ship operations, navigation, crew safety, and mission accomplishment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain full operational control and readiness of a Naval Service vessel.
- Conduct Bridge Watchkeeping duties ensuring safe navigation and monitoring maritime traffic.
- Ensure the safety and security of the ship and its crew at all times.
- Lead boarding parties during fisheries protection, anti-smuggling, and drug interdiction operations.
- Potentially advance to Commanding Officer with responsibility for directing a ship and its crew both domestically and internationally.
- Engage in ongoing leadership training and career advancement opportunities.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Must hold a Department of Transport Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 1, 2, or 3 with watchkeeping experience, or a recognised Naval Watchkeeping Certificate, or an equivalent qualification approved by the Minister for Defence.
- Applicants should be under 50 years old by December 31 of the application year with proof of age required if progressing.
- Minimum height requirement: 5ft 2in (157.48 cm), verified during selection.
- No visible tattoos above the collar at time of service; checks applied during recruitment.
- Eligible to work in Ireland with at least five years’ work permit duration; proof required.
- Must pass medical, physical, and security clearance standards assessed throughout recruitment.
Base Location and Pay
Position based at Naval Base, Haulbowline Island, Cork.
Officers are remunerated according to Officers Class A and Class C Pay Scales.
