Job description

Job Summary

The role demands 24/7 on-call availability to oversee all aspects of administration, security, safety, welfare, and programming at the Kershaw Correctional Institution, a level two facility. This leadership position ensures all inmates remain securely detained until officially released while prioritizing the safety of all assigned staff. The warden is equipped with an emergency vehicle to promptly address and manage any disturbances or emergencies within the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic planning, organization, direction, coordination, and management of all institutional activities and missions.
  • Guarantee inmate security and custody adherence under proper authority.
  • Develop and implement programs beneficial for inmate management and rehabilitation.
  • Ensure operations comply with state legislation, SCDC policies, and effective management practices with a focus on cost efficiency.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Completion of eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training after hiring is mandatory.
  • Meet South Carolina state minimums of a bachelor's degree plus supervisory experience in corrections or relevant military experience; or equivalent experience substituting the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • SCDC requirements include a high school diploma, twelve years in correctional, security, military, or police work, including six years of supervisory roles in corrections.
  • Bachelor's degree can replace up to four years of total experience, and an associate degree can replace two years; supervisory experience must be maintained without substitution.
  • Certification by the SCDC Training Academy and completion of a basic supervisory course within six months of appointment are required.
