Job Overview

The Captain role involves overseeing the daily operations of uniformed personnel and inmates within Lee Correctional Institution. The individual ensures safety and security protocols are strictly followed for staff, inmates, and visitors alike. Operating under minimal supervision, the Captain allocates personnel and resources efficiently across shifts and functional sectors, collaborating closely with classification and treatment teams to harmonize security and treatment efforts.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage day-to-day activities of uniformed staff and inmate populations.
  • Maintain safety and security standards for all staff members, inmates, and visitors on the premises.
  • Manage staffing assignments and resource deployment in various duty shifts and operational areas guided by policies and procedures.
  • Work cooperatively with institutional classification and treatment staff to integrate security and treatment operations effectively.

Training and Certification

Successful completion of an eight-week basic training program at the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) Basic Training Academy is mandatory upon hiring. Additionally, new Captains must complete a basic supervisory course within six months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Six years of relevant experience in correctional, security, military, or police environments, including at least two years in a supervisory role.
  • Associate or higher degree in criminal justice or related fields may substitute supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must attain certification from the SCDC Training Academy.
