Violent Crimes Victim Liaison

Position Overview

This role supports the Criminal Investigations Division by reviewing and evaluating cases, coordinating victim outreach, and connecting survivors with the right resources. The liaison helps strengthen communication between investigators and victims, with a focus on domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and related abuse cases. The position also includes technical and administrative work tied to the assigned unit.

This is a safety-sensitive role and is subject to random alcohol and drug screening.

Core Duties

• Examine case files and sexual assault evidence kit DNA outcomes, then triage victims using initial report details and lethality indicators.
• Reach out to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking to understand the seriousness of the situation and determine what follow-up steps are needed to help prevent further harm.
• Build action plans for each investigation and coordinate referrals or next steps with the District Court, District Attorney’s Office, Victims Assistant Unit, Rape Crisis Center, SANE, and the Crime Victims Reparation Commission.
• Connect victims with appropriate support options such as restraining orders, safety planning, and financial assistance when suitable.
• Collect, enter, and summarize data on reports reviewed, victims contacted, repeat offenders, arrests, felonies, domestic violence-related homicides, victim demographics, and follow-up actions.
• Track program results by comparing baseline information and progress data to measure impact and identify improvement opportunities.
• Maintain strong coordination and communication with law enforcement partners, victim service organizations, the District Attorney’s Office, and the courts.
• Support access to databases used by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department and New Mexico State Police Violent Crimes staff, and collaborate with those agencies to identify repeat offenders and recurring patterns.
• Attend monthly meetings led by the Albuquerque Family Advocacy Center Coordinating Committee and take on special assignments from management.
• Meet periodically with service providers such as Resources, Inc., Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), and the Asian Family Center to address shared concerns.
• Work with the District Attorney’s Office and District Court to help resolve victim concerns involving protective orders, court processes, and other legal aspects of the investigation.

Cold Case Unit Duties

• Review police reports, maintain Cold Case Unit files, and help detectives sort and categorize incoming tips.
• Contact victims’ families to relay detective follow-up actions and explain next steps in the investigation.
• Help detectives gather and properly manage evidence, including video surveillance, audio files, photographs, and other materials related to violent crime cases.
• Meet periodically with service partners to support cold case investigations.

Additional Duties

• Take part in professional meetings and stay current on new developments and practices in crisis outreach.
• Carry out other related responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

An associate degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice or sociology is required, along with three years of experience in law enforcement or victim assistance. Education and directly related experience may be considered interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Additional Requirements

• A valid New Mexico driver’s license is required, or it must be obtainable by the hire date.
• A City Operator’s Permit (COP) must be obtained within six months of hiring.
• Bilingual English/Spanish ability is preferred.

Working Conditions

The work is primarily based in an office setting, with occasional travel between sites and limited exposure to inclement weather. The position may require walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods.
