Video/Audio Producer for The Gray Area Podcast at Vox Media

Overview

Vox Media is seeking a highly skilled and organized video/audio producer for The Gray Area, a twice-weekly podcast focusing on deep discussions about philosophy, ethics, politics, and culture. This role involves crafting compelling video and audio versions of episodes and managing associated workflows to engage a broad audience.

Key Responsibilities

• Edit and assemble video podcasts using Descript, controlling pacing, visual clarity, and structure for quality viewer experience.
• Lead comprehensive video editing including multi-track and multi-camera coordination, framing consistency, and syncing.
• Direct remote host video intros, ensuring uniform lighting, framing, and delivery.
• Create and refine video assets such as thumbnails, captions, and on-screen texts optimized for YouTube.
• Perform advanced video editing tasks using Premiere and After Effects as needed.
• Maintain efficient video material workflows from ingest through publishing.
• Produce polished audio editions leveraging Descript and Pro Tools, executing edits, noise reduction, leveling, and mixing to refine clarity and structure.
• Oversee technical aspects for studio and remote recordings via platforms like Riverside.
• Conduct research and prepare materials to support philosophical guest conversations.
• Coordinate guest bookings, scheduling, and pre-interview communications.
• Pitch episode ideas, suggest guests, and contribute to conversation structures and prep documents.
• Make editorial decisions including implementing initial edits to video interviews.
• Write engaging, accurate episode descriptions for podcast and YouTube platforms.
• Manage YouTube publishing including uploading, scheduling, metadata optimization, and quality control.
• Ensure consistency across digital assets including thumbnails, tags, titles, captions, and playlists.
• Collaborate with social and audience teams to develop promotional clips and marketing materials.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years producing high-quality video and audio, preferably for longform, interview-style, or intellectually focused shows.
• Extensive audio engineering experience in podcast, radio, or comparable audio production environments.
• Advanced proficiency in Descript for video and audio editing.
• Strong skills in Pro Tools for detailed audio cleanup and mixing tasks.
• Competence with Adobe Premiere and some experience with After Effects for motion graphics adjustments.
• Solid understanding of YouTube best practices for publishing, including thumbnail creation and metadata management.
• Experience with remote recording platforms such as Riverside.
• Demonstrated ability managing remote production workflows with multiple collaborators.
• Technical knowledge of microphones, audio equalization, compression, and loudness standards.
• Familiarity with tools including Izotope RX and other common audio production software.

Location and Work Setup

This position is based in New York City or Washington DC but is currently remote. Employment is full-time and temporary with eligibility for benefits.

Compensation

The salary for this role ranges from $99,000 to $115,000 annually. Final compensation will depend on the candidate's experience and skills.
