Role Summary
The Vice President of Project Planning Strategy is a senior executive role responsible for leading the strategic planning and execution framework for major company projects. This position involves setting project development strategies, instituting project planning systems, optimizing the project portfolio, and aligning key projects with long-range company ambitions. Reporting typically to top leadership such as the CEO, COO, or Senior Vice Presidents, the VP ensures successful strategic project delivery through prioritization, resource management, risk oversight, and fostering collaboration across departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop corporate project strategies and detailed medium-to-long-term and annual project plans aligned with overall business goals.
- Translate high-level strategies into actionable project portfolios and execution plans.
- Assess project value, prioritization, and strategic alignment, advising executive leadership accordingly.
- Establish and manage an enterprise-wide project portfolio management system encompassing strategic, investment, transformation, and business development projects.
- Balance resource allocation, budgeting, risk management, and returns to support corporate objectives.
- Create standardized project planning processes, methodologies, evaluation frameworks, and governance structures.
- Perform strategic evaluations and investment analyses to support resource allocation and optimize project ROI.
- Monitor key project progress, ensuring strategic goals are met on time and to quality standards.
- Coordinate resources and collaboration across multiple departments to improve execution effectiveness and overcome operational obstacles.
- Implement project risk management systems for continuous process optimization and risk mitigation.
- Lead and develop project planning and strategic management teams, cultivating a culture of effective project management and boosting organizational capacity for strategic execution.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Project Management, Engineering Management, Business Administration, Strategic Management, Operations Management, or related fields.
- MBA or Master’s degree in Project Management is preferred.
- Certifications such as PMP, PgMP, PRINCE2, or PMI-ACP are advantageous.
- Over 20 years of experience in project management, strategic planning, corporate operations, or business transformation.
- Between 8 and 15+ years in senior leadership roles focused on project management, such as VP of Project Management, PMO Director, or Program Director.
- Proven background in managing complex, multinational, or large-scale enterprise projects, including strategic project planning, major investments, or digital transformation efforts.
