Position Overview
The Vice President of Communications is a senior leadership role reporting to the Chief Operating Officer at LGBTQ Victory Fund and LGBTQ Victory Institute, based in Washington, DC. This position leads the communication strategy across multiple channels and manages a team consisting of senior digital strategist, senior communications and marketing manager, and a press secretary. The role is crucial in shaping the organization's media relations, digital outreach, fundraising communications, marketing, and brand initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a growing communications team, developing capacity and organizational structure as needs evolve.
- Create and implement a strategic communications plan to boost organizational visibility and brand identity while fostering media and influencer relationships.
- Utilize existing media connections and develop new partnerships with key stakeholders to secure enhanced coverage and elevate brand presence.
- Oversee multi-channel content across owned properties such as websites, social media, emails, and marketing materials to ensure consistent messaging and branding.
- Provide strategic communications support for fundraising and program events, including messaging, speaker preparation, event staging, and onsite communication assistance.
- Expand communications services for LGBTQ candidates and elected officials, including rapid response and crisis support.
- Supervise digital strategy with a focus on improving website usability, content governance, accessibility, and conversions collaborating with internal and external teams.
- Establish performance metrics and reporting systems to measure communication and marketing impact for informed decision-making.
- Drive brand and marketing initiatives, ensuring consistent brand management across all platforms and materials including publications such as the annual report.
- Serve as a key spokesperson and senior media contact, working closely with the President & CEO during high-profile media events.
- Manage communications department budget, set goals, and assess team performance to ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in media relations and communications, including leadership in managing a communications department.
- Proven record in overseeing comprehensive communications plans, media relations, and marketing programs aligned with organizational missions.
- Skilled and persuasive communicator who can engage diverse audiences including media, donors, and board members.
- Capability to manage multiple priorities effectively within fast-paced environments.
- Comfort and aptitude in rapid-response, high-pressure communication scenarios.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Established relationships with reporters are highly advantageous.
- Familiarity with LGBTQ issues and U.S. political landscape is an asset.
