About the Global Procurement Function
The Global Procurement team at Avery Dennison is positioned as a value-creating part of the business. Its purpose is to generate enterprise-wide impact through a unified procurement approach, strengthen competitive advantage through excellent procurement practices, deepen trusted relationships with internal and external partners, reduce risk, apply innovative thinking, and adopt digital and sustainable ways of working.
Role Summary
This leadership position sets the strategic course for the Global Materials Group Procurement organization across Label and Packaging Materials, Graphics Solutions, Reflective Solutions, Performance Tapes, and Adhesives. The role is centered on building competitiveness and creating value across approximately $3B of global spend, covering major categories such as Papers, Films, and Chemicals while also bringing together category managers worldwide into a coordinated global community.
The role reports directly to the President of Materials Group. It may be based in Oegstgeest, The Netherlands (Amsterdam–The Hague area) or Mentor, Ohio, and requires regular international travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Set direction for the global Materials Group procurement organization overseeing Paper, Films, Chemicals, and Indirects, with total spend of about $3B.
- Lead, coach, and support five regional Procurement Leaders, who together manage a team of roughly 100 FTEs and also serve as global Category Leaders.
- Advance and refine enterprise procurement programs, using leading practices and tools such as should-cost modeling and total cost of ownership.
- Modernize procurement operations by driving digital adoption and using AI to improve negotiation results, reduce cost, strengthen resilience, and automate workflows.
- Shape procurement strategy in alignment with Materials Group business goals and help regional teams convert global direction into local plans.
- Improve productivity year over year through material cost-out initiatives and supplier base evolution, supported by structured RFX processes and total cost of ownership analysis.
- Track materials trends closely and help create innovation advantage by partnering with Product Line and R&D teams on future sourcing needs and supplier innovation plans.
- Identify sourcing risks early, build alternative supply options, and mitigate threats related to geopolitics, climate, and compliance across the global supply chain.
- Work with sustainability partners to engage suppliers on Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, water reduction, and the introduction of more sustainable materials.
- Support supply chain due diligence efforts focused on improving visibility into chemical and human-rights risks.
- Provide regular market, competitive, and geopolitical intelligence to help the enterprise make informed supply chain decisions.
- Segment the supplier base, identify preferred partners under the Avantage Supplier Program, and manage senior-level supplier relationships.
- Collaborate with leadership peers, regional general managers, R&D, Product Line, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to support pricing, productivity, cost-out, innovation, and issue resolution.
Skills, Mindset, and Behavior
The ideal leader brings strong strategy formulation and execution capability, operates effectively in global and matrixed environments, and can guide teams to high performance. The role calls for strong collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders, analytical and reporting skills, and the ability to lead complex, multi-layer negotiations across regions.
Personality-wise, the position suits an optimistic, situational leader who can build team cohesion, inspire performance, and support peers and senior leaders. A belief in technology and digitalization as major sources of procurement value is essential.
Behaviorally, the candidate should foster an inclusive, collaborative environment that values shared success and open exchange of ideas while consistently reflecting Avery Dennison’s core values of Integrity, Courage, External Focus, Diversity, Sustainability, Innovation, Teamwork, and Excellence.
Qualifications and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree or MBA is preferred.
- At least 15 years of experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or direct category management with a global organization.
- Experience with Paper and Films is preferred; Chemicals experience is a strong advantage, and indirect procurement exposure is also beneficial.
- Background in leading global and regional teams within a matrix structure, preferably with international scope.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver results, build cohesive teams, and lead transformation with a forward-looking mindset.
- This position involves regular travel.
