About the Department
The Maryland Department of Veterans & Military Families was established in 1999 by the State Legislature as an executive agency dedicated to aiding veterans, active duty service members, their families, and dependents in obtaining earned military benefits.
The department encompasses five core programs including the Service and Benefits Program, Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Cemetery and Memorial Program, Communications, Outreach & Advocacy Program, and the Maryland Veterans Trust Fund.
Position Location and Grade
This role is classified as Grade 14 and is based at 31 Hopkins Plaza, Room 3020, Baltimore, Maryland 21201.
Primary Responsibilities
The incumbent will initiate and submit claims for compensation, pension, entitlements, and other veteran benefits to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and relevant agencies on behalf of veterans, eligible dependents, and survivors. Ensuring veterans obtain their entitled benefits is mandated by Maryland law.
The role involves assisting and advocating for veterans and their families in claims processing, conducting interviews and inquiries to prevent neglect, working across all Service Program locations within 50 miles, and facilitating access to military records necessary for benefit claims.
The position also includes providing intake and screening services, serving as the primary contact for individuals seeking department services, conducting public relations activities, and representing the department at veteran organization events and public meetings.
Qualifications
Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Experience: One year of experience delivering services to veterans and dependents.
Preferred Skills: Ability to interpret and communicate veteran benefit systems effectively, and strong customer interaction skills to ensure satisfaction and successful outcomes.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification as a Veterans’ Services Counselor by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (required as per U.S. Code Title 38, Section 5901-5905).
- A valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license if duties involve driving.
Selection and Examination Process
Applicants must adequately demonstrate qualification through detailed application responses. Candidates will be evaluated and classified as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified, with an eligibility list maintained for at least one year.
Assessment methods may include reviewing education, training, and experience relevant to the role.
