About the Role
This position involves delivering and collecting mail either on foot or by vehicle under various road and weather conditions within a designated area. The role requires maintaining professional and effective relationships with customers and the public while possessing a general knowledge of postal laws, regulations, products, and procedures. Physical demands include carrying mail weighing up to 35 pounds in shoulder bags and handling mail containers weighing up to 70 pounds.
Key Responsibilities
- Sort and arrange all types of mail sequentially for delivery along assigned routes, adjusting cases as needed.
- Extract mail from distribution cases, prepare it for efficient delivery by self or substitutes, including preparing mail for relay box deliveries along the route.
- Manage undeliverable mail following established guidelines.
- Deliver mail on foot or by vehicle following a set schedule, including picking up mail from relay boxes and collecting outgoing mail from street letter boxes and customers.
- Use portable electronic scanning devices to track deliveries as instructed.
- Deliver and collect fees for customs, postage-due, and collect-on-delivery (COD) mail; obtain receipts for registered and insured mail and account for these items upon route completion.
- Return collected mail to the post office after completing the route.
- Verify and update mailing cards from advertisers listing customers' or former customers' addresses.
- Provide postal information to customers and supply change-of-address cards and various postal forms.
- Report any unusual mail delivery incidents, including issues with street letter boxes or delivery equipment, to supervisors.
- Learn mail casing on other routes as assigned and assist professionally with office colleagues.
- Substitute carriers may perform clerical duties and may be required to pass examinations on city distribution schemes.
- Additional duties include checking establishments to ensure undeliverable mail is not improperly held, delivering stamps and supplies to designated stations, manning carriers' delivery windows, registering first-class letters and packages, and delivering mail on other routes as needed.
