Job description

About the Opportunity

The University of Tasmania is looking for a University Dive Officer to provide expert guidance and leadership across scientific diving and vessel operations. The role is focused on strengthening safety systems, keeping risks under control, and ensuring work is carried out efficiently and safely within the Safety and Wellbeing team.

In this position, you will work closely with the Dive Safety Committee, Dive Officers, Dive Coordinators, and People Leaders to build practical work systems and support ongoing improvement. A strong part of the job is developing trusted relationships, listening to stakeholders, and helping translate operational realities into safe, workable procedures.

You will also spend regular time in the field, observing how diving operations are performed and using those insights to improve safety processes and support a connected, high-performing culture. The university is seeking someone who can contribute specialist knowledge while also collaborating openly within a diverse and supportive team.

What You'll Bring

This role suits a professional with deep experience in safety and wellbeing within large or complex organisations, along with the ability to influence behaviour, improve safety culture, and produce clear operational resources such as procedures, guidelines, and training materials.

You should be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, and have strong project management skills with the ability to manage priorities and deadlines effectively. Experience in a marine research setting is highly desirable.

Qualifications and Licences

The role requires the knowledge and qualifications expected under AS/NZS 2299.2 Occupational diving operations Part 2: Scientific diving for the position of Dive Officer.

Required credentials include certification to AS 2815.6 Restricted Scuba Diver, or an approved equivalent, as well as a current driver's licence for car use.

Additional desirable qualifications include certification to AS 2815.1 Occupational Scuba Diver or equivalent, certification to AS 2815.2 Restricted Occupational Surface Supplied or equivalent, and either a Coxswain certificate or relevant vessel operational knowledge.

Benefits

The university offers a range of employee benefits, including 26 weeks of paid parental leave for primary carers, 17% superannuation contribution, health and fitness membership options, accommodation and car hire discounts, health insurance and banking offers, and novated leasing.

About the University

The University of Tasmania is committed to making a meaningful difference for Tasmania and beyond. With campuses in Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie, as well as a specialised health campus in Sydney, the university aims to foster a workplace where people can connect, belong, and grow while contributing to education, research, health, and environmental outcomes.

This appointment is at HEO 8 level, with a total remuneration package of up to $152,033. The base salary range is $114,383 to $129,943, plus 17% superannuation.
