Job description

Role overview

This position is for an experienced mechanical supervisor to support maintenance work within the aircraft transparencies and oxygen bay. The role focuses on keeping aircraft airworthy by assigning tasks appropriately, authorising work, and supervising maintenance activity in line with required standards.

The supervisor will manage personnel, coordinate tasks, and help ensure delivery commitments are achieved at a tactical level. The role also calls for strong leadership, people management, and an ability to recognise wider dependencies and identify opportunities for improvement.

Core activities

  • Carry out detailed maintenance inspections and oversee work on transparencies and oxygen bay components.
  • Direct the team so maintenance is completed to plan, flag issues early, escalate when needed, and report any effect on wider programme delivery.
  • Confirm that staff assigned to tasks are properly competent and approved, and keep both personal and team authorisations current in line with AMC requirements.
  • Support short- to medium-term delivery targets by supervising others and reporting progress to management.
  • Guide and develop team members through formal assessment processes, including PDRs, and support training requests such as on-the-job training.
  • Communicate effectively when exchanging complex information and demonstrate strong people management skills.
  • Scope and perform independent critical inspections where required.
  • Maintain a personal logbook to prove current and recent competence, and sign other personnel’s logbooks within authorised trade and skill limits. Where appointed as a designated assessor, complete authorisation and competency checks and review Part 145 licence application packs before submission.
  • Perform tasked maintenance and diagnostic work on Typhoon transparencies and oxygen components, including inspections, repairs, modifications, fault rectification, and replacements as needed.
  • Show a flexible, proactive attitude and take direction appropriately.
  • Report progress against delivery targets to the supervisor.
  • Support transparencies and oxygen bay activities needed to remain compliant with MOE and QAF procedures, such as oversight checks and control of tooling and test equipment.
  • Investigate faults and raise ad hoc work cards for defects discovered during maintenance.
  • Ensure all maintenance work is fully recorded and that airworthiness records are maintained in the relevant IT or paper systems, with issues compiled and escalated as appropriate.

Key accountabilities

  • Manage regulatory activities effectively by setting targets, tracking progress, and developing performance improvement plans. Prioritise work across teams to improve efficiency and decide whether escalated issues affect continuing airworthiness, resolving them or escalating further as needed.
  • Follow the regulatory framework, related procedures, standards, and internal company requirements, while also suggesting changes where necessary.
  • Make sure all Part 145 tasks are documented correctly and airworthiness records are updated in the relevant systems. Confirm that only suitably qualified, experienced, and authorised people carry out Part 145 work, and support the integration of this activity into the wider business by involving key stakeholders throughout the process.
  • Promote Human Factors, Error Management, Risk Management, and Safety Assurance practices within the Part 145 team, along with proactive hazard analysis and mitigation.
  • Work within the QAF governance and assurance framework, including process confirmations and independent audits. Respond promptly to audit findings, support reviews with the required information, implement improvements to address non-compliance, and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Understand and apply the continuing airworthiness regulatory framework, help introduce regulation-driven changes into maintenance work, and ensure compliance with other obligations such as ITAR, EaPW, and ISO requirements.
  • Meet all applicable contractual obligations.

Qualifications and knowledge

Applicants should have completed an engineering apprenticeship, preferably in aeronautical engineering, or hold a military equivalent apprenticeship or qualification. The minimum academic requirement for this role is City & Guilds 2675 or 2661 in Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance, or an equivalent qualification.

The role requires an experienced and capable leader who has spent at least 2 years at technician level before moving into supervision. Candidates should be able to demonstrate breadth of experience, current and recent competence through a logbook of skills, knowledge, and authorisations for the relevant aircraft type or bay work, and practical understanding of aviation safety standards and safe working practices.

Additional expectations include knowledge of on-the-job training instructional methods, broad technical competence in the relevant subject area, awareness of how the team interacts with others to achieve wider goals, and an understanding of continuous improvement.

Mandatory training and compliance

  • Typhoon Mechanical Trade Q Course, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Human Factors standard course.
  • E&PW awareness standard course.
  • ITAR awareness standard course.
  • Comfortable using IT systems.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Personal compliance with risk assessments, SHE policies, and related procedures is required.
