Job description

Role overview

The Traffic Control Person supports safe movement through active work zones by helping establish traffic patterns, guiding vehicles and pedestrians, and assisting with the setup and removal of temporary control measures. This role works alongside construction crews to reduce risk to workers and keep the site operating safely and efficiently.

The position reports to Traffic Control Agents. Before beginning work, the selected candidate must complete company-provided training to become certified in basic traffic safety practices.

Key duties

  • Install, maintain, and dismantle temporary work zones, including warning signs, cones, and rumble strips, in line with the Temporary Workplace Traffic Control Manual.
  • Load and unload traffic control equipment at job sites and into company vehicles.
  • Finish and hand in all required paperwork promptly before leaving the final site of the day.
  • Use and care for PPE according to company rules.
  • Keep company vehicles tidy and organized, and report any safety issues or vehicle defects to management.
  • Check the start time and location of the job site or meeting point through the company app as sent by the office scheduler.
  • Read and follow the safety manual and employee handbook.
  • Carry out other assigned duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • A valid driver’s licence is preferred.
  • A smartphone with internet access is required for scheduling, communication, and timekeeping.
  • Strong verbal communication skills are needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather, including heat, cold, and rain.
  • Ability to remain standing for the full shift and perform repeated hand and arm movements is necessary.
  • Frequent breaks are not part of this role.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical capability to carry out all flagging duties is required.
  • Reliable transportation to job sites and/or meeting locations is essential.
  • Travelling by personal or company vehicle between home and job site, or between job site and home, is considered commuting time and is not paid as a principal duty.
  • Carpooling with crew members is optional and for employee convenience only.
  • Candidates must be able to pass the provincial Traffic Control Person Course.

Additional information

The main work involves traffic control and flagging at assigned sites, including setting up, maintaining, and removing temporary work zones.

The role also requires creating a safe work area using cones, barriers, and stop/proceed-slowly signage so that traffic does not endanger workers or interfere with construction activities.

Constant awareness of both site operations and surrounding traffic is essential, and full compliance with safety regulations is mandatory.
