Position Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger role involves managing and directing vehicular flow safely around construction and maintenance zones. Responsibilities include deploying and removing traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades to safeguard workers and the public. Communication with motorists is conducted through hand signals and traffic control tools to ensure smooth, safe navigation of work zones. This role demands high attention to detail, stamina to work outdoors across various weather conditions, and the ability to stand for long durations.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and remove signage, cones, and barricades to redirect traffic around work sites.
- Utilize stop/slow paddles to efficiently control traffic patterns.
- Maintain consistent communication with crew members through two-way radios.
- Stand, walk, and use hands and arms intensively, potentially for up to 10 hours daily.
- Lift and maneuver objects exceeding 50 pounds as required.
- Operate company vehicles for transporting traffic control equipment to job locations.
- Conduct routine inspections and upkeep of company vehicles to ensure operational reliability.
- Work outdoors exposed to shifting weather, equipment noise, moving machinery, traffic hazards, fumes, and airborne substances.
- Adhere strictly to company policies and safety protocols.
- Perform additional duties assigned to support team goals.
Qualifications and Skills
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of background and motor vehicle record checks.
- Pass a drug screening and comply with Federal Department of Transportation standards.
- Wear mandatory safety gear including safety-toe boots, hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests.
- Proficiency in two-way radio communication.
- Capability to work in diverse weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Excellent communication skills to coordinate with contractors and internal teams, emphasizing customer service.
- Strong teamwork skills and dependability with excellent attendance and reliable transportation.
- Completion of the ATSSA Flagger certification and company-sponsored Defensive Driving course.
- Flexibility to travel statewide with occasional overnight stays, and availability for night and weekend work as necessary.
- Ability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
