Overview
Join the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) as part of the Traffic Bluffton Sign Crew to contribute meaningfully to Indiana's transportation infrastructure. Primary Responsibilities
- Adhere strictly to all INDOT safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
- Operate various basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean roads and adjacent rights-of-way.
- Supervise team members to ensure work assignment completion and communicate any issues promptly to supervisors.
- Coordinate with contractors to ensure compliance with INDOT standards and project specifications.
- Engage in winter operations including snow and ice removal activities.
- Conduct routine inspections and perform maintenance on equipment, including minor repairs, preventive upkeep, refueling, and pre-trip checks.
- Install, maintain, and repair traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings.
- Respond to emergency situations by managing cleanup, traffic control, lane closures, signage, and barricade setup.
Additional Duties Depending on Assignment
- Bridge Maintenance Specialist: Provide technical leadership, oversee work crews, and operate maintenance equipment for bridge-related tasks.
- Testing: Collect and test construction materials at various sites to ensure quality assurance per INDOT standards and record results accurately.
- Construction: Assist with planning, design, construction, and rehabilitation of highways and bridges, including inspection and documentation tasks.
- Geotechnical Services: Maintain qualifications for soil testing, run laboratory equipment, and conduct advanced soil and rock testing procedures.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or commitment to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
- Ability to pass a drug screening as a condition of employment.
- Understanding of federal, state, and local highway regulations and construction inspection standards.
- Familiarity with drafting, surveying techniques, and ability to interpret technical documentation.
- Capacity to lead and coordinate a field crew independently.
- Physical capability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform manual tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds, dragging, stooping, standing, and prolonged walking.
- Additional specialty knowledge as required for specific roles such as testing certifications, inspector certifications, or geotechnical proficiency exams.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred; relevant experience may substitute formal education.
Compensation and Benefits
- Starting pay typically at $24.26 per hour, adjustable based on experience and education.
- Additional $1 per hour for employees holding required CDL and endorsements; onsite CDL training available.
