Job description
Position Overview
This temporary custodian role requires joining the CUPE Local 748 Union and successfully completing a Criminal Record Check conducted by the employer. The position offers flexible shift options for start times, which will be fixed upon selection:
- Option 1: 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM
- Option 2: 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM
Role Responsibilities
The custodian provides thorough cleaning and minor repairs within safety and security guidelines. Duties include prioritizing maintenance tasks and supporting user groups by preparing and monitoring facilities.
- Perform comprehensive cleaning of assigned locations, including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, washing, scrubbing, disinfecting, and garbage disposal.
- Use custodial equipment such as vacuums, polishers, and carpet cleaners.
- Conduct seasonal maintenance like waxing floors and cleaning walls, desks, and furniture.
- Rearrange furniture and equipment as needed for cleaning and user requirements.
- Open the building for occupancy, complete initial security inspections, and secure all entry points by shift end.
- Assist and supervise facility use by user groups, addressing unauthorized presence appropriately.
- Maintain minor repairs and report vandalism to supervisory staff.
- Respond promptly to custodial requests from staff and school administrators.
- Handle urgent situations, communicate effectively, and manage supply ordering and inventory.
- Operate relevant equipment safely, attend district-provided training, and adhere to safety protocols including WHMIS guidelines.
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum education level of Grade 10.
- Completion of a Building Service Worker Certificate (approximately six weeks) or six months of relevant custodial or maintenance experience.
- Experience in custodial or maintenance roles preferred.
- Patience, tact, discretion, and professionalism are essential.
- Ability to respond to students sensitively and respectfully.
- Knowledge of custodial processes, site security, and safe work practices.
- Effective communication and confidentiality maintenance abilities.
- Physical capability to move furniture, use equipment, and prioritize tasks with limited supervision.
Working Conditions
- Physically demanding work involving walking, standing, lifting, stooping, reaching, moving furniture, working at heights, and equipment transport according to safety standards.
- Work performed primarily indoors in heated, well-lit environments with occasional outdoor duties in various weather conditions.
- Potential exposure to challenging behavior, substance-affected youth, and bodily fluids.
