Job description

About ASB

ASB is a purpose-driven organisation that aims to help people, communities, and the environment grow together. With a long-standing presence and a strong commitment to helping New Zealanders get ahead, the bank places its values at the centre of how it works. It offers the scale and reliability of a large organisation while recognising the value each person brings and supporting career growth through meaningful work.

The role is based at ASB C:Drive in Albany, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

About the role

The Identity & Integration platform is focused on delivering dependable, innovative technology solutions quickly, using deep expertise and strong technical thinking. The team works in a responsive, proactive, and transparent way, with a goal of enabling always-on capability, delivering modern technology at pace, keeping things simple, and supporting secure innovation.

As a Technical Consultant, you will help shape how ASB connects with partners and customers through its External API platform. You will take the lead on designing and delivering new integrations, with particular emphasis on Open Banking and Financial-grade APIs. Working alongside engineers, squads, and stakeholders across the business, you will provide technical direction, practical advice, and collaborative leadership.

Key responsibilities

  • Drive the design and delivery of new integrations for ASB’s External API platform.
  • Offer technical leadership across Open Banking, FAPI, and integration architecture and implementation.
  • Work with third-party providers and internal teams to provide consultation and technical guidance.
  • Convert business needs into clear and robust technical solutions.
  • Make sure solutions satisfy security, risk, and control expectations before production release.
  • Represent engineering perspectives while working with squads and platform teams to deliver strong services.
  • Contribute to technical decisions beyond your immediate team when required.

About you

You bring a practical and considered approach to technical leadership, with the confidence to make decisions and the curiosity to improve how things are done. You are comfortable handling complex work, engaging with a range of stakeholders, and guiding delivery from idea through to production. You care about secure and reliable services and enjoy collaborating to achieve outcomes that matter to customers.

What we are looking for

  • Substantial experience in software engineering with strong technical depth.
  • Demonstrated background in solution architecture or technical architecture roles.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver large-scale integrations.
  • Practical experience with Open Banking and Financial-grade APIs.
  • Strong development and design capability in C# and .NET.
  • Experience with API gateways, access policies, and integration patterns.
  • Good knowledge of digital certificates, mutual TLS, and secure API communication.
  • Deep understanding of authentication and authorisation, including OAuth and OIDC.
  • Exposure to containerisation and enterprise networking technologies.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and version control tools such as Git.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and clear communication skills.

Additional experience that would be an advantage

  • Experience with cloud platforms, especially Azure.
  • Hands-on experience with security frameworks for Financial-grade APIs.
  • Exposure to observability and monitoring tools such as the ELK stack.
  • Experience working in Agile environments.

Working for ASB

  • Career development through training sessions, courses, and internal opportunities.
  • An inclusive workplace with values-led teams, diversity, and support for employee-led communities.
  • Health and wellbeing support, including Southern Cross Wellbeing One health insurance, lifestyle and volunteering leave, and mental wellbeing support.
  • Attractive benefits such as discounted banking, insurance, and a generous parental leave top-up.
  • The chance to contribute to a purpose-led organisation that makes a positive difference for New Zealanders.

Additional information

The role is focused on helping build the next generation of payment solutions for New Zealanders, with an emphasis on exceptional customer experiences and meaningful impact. The posting also references the broader financial crime future at ASB, which appears to be a generic carryover from the source and should not be treated as a separate requirement.
