Qualifications and skills
No prior work experience is required, although retail background and familiarity with pets or live animals would be an advantage. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory. Regardless of education level, the person in this role must be able to read, write, and count accurately.
Successful candidates should bring strong communication and problem-solving ability, basic computer skills, good interpersonal judgment, and the ability to resolve issues professionally and with minimal conflict. Knowledge of pet food, pet products, and live-animal care is especially desirable.
Working conditions and physical demands
The job is generally performed indoors in a moderately noisy setting, with occasional work in outdoor lot areas. Floors are typically hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt, and lighting and temperature conditions are usually adequate. Shifts vary by store and are typically at least 4 hours long and may run beyond 8 hours.
This is a physically active position. Team members must move quickly and safely throughout the store and outdoor areas, operate store equipment efficiently, and deliver high customer service throughout the shift. The role may require lifting merchandise overhead, standing for long periods, bending, kneeling, twisting, crouching, squatting, stooping, and climbing ladders. It also involves handling and transferring live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds, as well as completing all required training and certifications.
Additional information
This job outline provides a general view of the role and does not include every possible responsibility. Team members may be assigned other duties by their supervisor.
Benefits
Full-time team members, along with part-time team members, are eligible for a benefits package that can include medical, dental, and vision coverage, company-paid life and disability insurance, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and family planning support such as adoption and surrogacy assistance.
For part-time new hires, benefits eligibility is based on averaging at least 15 hours per week during the 90-day lookback period. That lookback begins on the first day of the month after the hire date. If the hourly requirement is satisfied, coverage starts on the first day of the month after 4 months of continuous service.
Please review the applicable benefits and leave policies for the position for additional details.
