Job description

Role overview

This position centers on helping shoppers and coworkers, backing sales efforts, and completing assigned store tasks while delivering a memorable customer experience.

Key duties

  • Keep attendance consistent and predictable.
  • Be ready to work the schedule needed by the store, including different hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime.
  • Support sales through the TEAM approach: thank the customer, engage with the customer and/or pet, recommend products or services, and leave a positive impression.
  • Spend most of the workday carrying out a mix of store operations tasks accurately, efficiently, and safely, often without advance notice.
  • Process transactions using the cash register/computer and follow established cash-handling procedures.
  • Restock and recover merchandise.
  • Take part in required freight processing.
  • Complete planogram work such as merchandising, sets, and resets.
  • Assemble merchandise as needed.
  • Handle janitorial and cleaning duties.
  • Carry out price changes and markdowns.
  • Help customers load purchases.
  • Protect the health and safety of live animals, including cleaning and maintaining holding tanks when needed.
  • Finish all paperwork and records related to assigned duties.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and preferred experience

No prior experience is required. Retail background and/or knowledge of pets and live animals is a strong advantage. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, though not mandatory. Regardless of education, the person in this role must be able to read, write, and count accurately.

Skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of pets, live animals, pet food, and pet supplies is preferred.
  • Clear verbal and written communication.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to resolve concerns fairly and with minimal conflict.

Working conditions

The job is generally performed indoors in a moderately noisy setting, with hard-surface floors and outdoor lots. Lighting and temperature are typically adequate. Shifts differ by store but usually last at least 4 hours and can go beyond 8 hours. The role also requires helping maintain a safe, productive environment and following company safety training and guidelines.

Physical demands

This is a non-sedentary position that requires moving quickly and safely throughout the store and outdoor areas. The role involves operating store equipment, working the sales floor, side lot, stock area, and register area, and handling documentation accurately.

  • Occasional lifting or reaching overhead.
  • Frequent standing, kneeling, twisting, crouching, squatting, bending, stooping, and ladder climbing.
  • Ability to stay on your feet and move through the store for an entire shift.
  • Ability to operate computers, cash registers, and related equipment continuously.
  • Ability to process merchandise and information through the point-of-sale system.
  • Ability to move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds.
  • Completion of all required training and certification.
