Job description
Role overview
This role is for an hourly-paid English teacher based in Doha, Qatar, supporting teaching and training delivery at a British Council centre. The post reports to the Teaching Operation Manager and involves teaching English language classes and/or corporate training sessions, with responsibility for planning, preparation, delivery, and related administrative support.
Purpose of the role
The main aim of the position is to deliver high-quality English teaching or corporate training, develop suitable learning materials, and create a respectful, supportive classroom experience that reflects different learning styles. Teachers without DELTA-level qualifications are expected to be developing toward that standard, with guidance from managers and colleagues. The role also includes administrative work that helps the centre serve its audience effectively and operate smoothly, as well as ongoing professional development to stay current in the field.
About the organisation
The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. It works to build understanding and trust between the UK and other countries through arts and culture, education, and English language work. The organisation operates in more than 100 countries and reaches millions of people each year through face-to-face activity, online channels, broadcasts, and publications. It was founded in 1934 and operates as a UK charity under Royal Charter and a public body.
Centre context
The British Council has been present in Qatar since 1972 and employs 85 full-time staff from varied backgrounds. The Qatar Teaching Centre serves up to 1,000 adult and young learner students each term through on-site public courses and also runs an off-site contract programme. The centre has 12 classrooms, works alongside strong exams and programme activity, and currently includes around 8 full-time teachers, 2 coordinators, 1 SEND Champion, and 1 Senior Teacher. Teaching takes place on site, online, and in company settings for corporate clients, with around 18,000 class hours delivered each year.
Main duties
- Plan, prepare, and teach high-quality English classes or corporate training sessions, including the creation of culturally suitable materials and attention to different learner styles.
- Use technology effectively in lessons and work with the centre’s SMS system, online class tools, and student portal/forum features.
- Track learner development through early diagnostic checks and ongoing assessment, then advise students at mid-term and end-of-term points.
- Teach in a lively, engaging manner while meeting standards in lesson aims, staging, interaction patterns, pacing, pronunciation work, correction, feedback, and continuity of content.
- Stay professionally up to date and help strengthen the centre’s reputation in English language teaching.
- Complete required administrative work accurately and on time, including reports, certificates, registers, records of work, registration data, progress records, and performance portfolio documentation.
- Support registration sessions and act as a representative of the organisation at the point of sale, including interactions with students and accompanying family members where relevant.
- Work with customer service colleagues at the front desk on registration and counselling duties when needed.
- Maintain awareness of the full range of British Council Qatar products, services, and events so enquiries can be handled through to resolution and students can be encouraged to participate in other activities.

Internal contacts include teaching colleagues, customer service teams, administrative staff, and academic managers. External contacts include centre students, parents of young learners, and training managers and HR professionals from client organisations.
