Role overview
The Bureau of Indian Education is hiring a Teacher in English/Language Arts (CY-1710) for its Pine Ridge, South Dakota location. In this position, you will teach at a professional level in a classroom, team-teaching, remedial, or special-services setting, depending on the school’s structure. The role centers on designing, delivering, and reviewing instruction in line with established guidelines.
What you will do
- Develop annual instructional plans and corresponding day-to-day lesson plans for each unit of study, including goals, learning activities, and assessment methods for both classwide and individual learning programs.
- Deliver lessons using suitable teaching approaches and classroom techniques, adapting materials and resources as needed to support student achievement.
- Create learning opportunities that strengthen cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development while addressing the needs and interests of all students.
- Track student progress on an ongoing basis through criterion-referenced tests, standardized assessments, oral evaluations, and other appropriate tools, then adjust instruction to meet individual needs.
- Share progress updates with parents and other relevant stakeholders, while maintaining all required records in accordance with applicable rules.
- Maintain classroom order and manage discipline independently except in cases involving chronic or severe behavioral concerns.
- Provide individual counseling and guidance within established limits, using student background information to support effective learning and behavioral progress.
Eligibility and qualifications
Applicants must be U.S. citizens. A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution is required, along with a valid teacher certification/licensure in the appropriate endorsement area for the state where the position is located. Emergency or provisional certificates may be accepted if issued by the state certification authority.
Candidates holding valid state certification from another state may still be considered. If selected, they may receive a provisional contract requiring full state teacher certification within two full contract terms. This role is separate from the Transitional Teacher, CY-1701 announcement, which is intended for applicants pursuing licensure through alternative certification routes or those holding only DODEA certification; that path requires full state certification within three contract terms.
Additional employment conditions

- The probationary period lasts one academic year, equal to two full academic semesters, during which fitness and continued employment will be reviewed.
- Initial appointments under Public Law 95-561 do not grant competitive or career status.

Pay and education details
Pay placement depends on degree level and possession of 24 hours in education, with final pay setting determined after selection. To move above pay level 11, candidates must meet the degree requirement from an accredited university in a related field of study or education and have at least 24 hours of education.
- Pay Level 11: Bachelor’s degree
- Pay Level 12: Bachelor’s degree plus 15 graduate semester hours
- Pay Level 13: Bachelor’s degree plus 30 graduate semester hours
- Pay Level 14: Master’s degree
- Pay Level 15: Master’s degree plus 15 graduate semester hours
- Pay Level 16: Master’s degree plus 30 graduate semester hours
- Pay Level 17: Earned doctorate
Education used for qualification must be in coursework related to the subject being taught or to general teaching methods. Transcripts are required to verify education; legible official or unofficial copies may be submitted initially, but official transcripts must be provided upon selection. Advisement printouts and web printouts are not acceptable. If foreign education is being used, it must be evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation service or otherwise shown to be equivalent to accredited U.S. education.

Teacher pay rates are adjusted based on the school calendar for the location through a Modified Hourly/Date Rate (MHR/MDR). These rates are not negotiable.
