Job description
About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space enterprise delivering rapid launch services, spacecraft design and manufacturing, satellite payloads and components to facilitate ambitious missions including scientific research, climate observation, national security, and technology demonstrations. Our Electron rocket ranks as the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket, having deployed over 230 satellites. Currently, we are developing Neutron, a next-generation reusable medium-lift launch vehicle intended for larger constellation deployments.
About Neutron
Neutron is engineered as a reusable medium-lift rocket capable of delivering 13,000 kg to low Earth orbit. It features a 7-meter fairing and simplified operations to ensure reliability and flexibility for constellation deployments, resupply efforts, and deep space missions. This role offers the opportunity to pioneer the development of this rocket from inception.
Role Overview
As Supervisor for Neutron Mechanical Production, you will lead up to 20 technicians in assembling and testing mechanical parts for development, qualification, and flight articles. Your responsibilities will include managing quality control, scheduling, safety procedures, and supporting manufacturing methods while collaborating closely with engineering to enhance design-for-manufacture.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of up to 20 technicians in assembling and testing mechanical components for development and flight readiness.
- Own health and safety protocols, ensuring adherence, training completion, and fostering a culture of safety.
- Coordinate work planning with engineering and program management over a three-month horizon, assign tasks to meet timelines, and manage schedule risks.
- Ensure compliance with manufacturing instructions and drawings; conduct root-cause analyses and implement corrective actions; approve release of flight components.
- Conduct performance evaluations, oversee leave schedules, interview new candidates, and cultivate leadership within your team.
- Support research and development, assist in pre-production manufacturing, and facilitate transitions to full-rate production.
- Track and report daily team metrics, manage skills matrices, and identify training needs.
- Set and uphold high standards for process, conduct, and craftsmanship across all associated departments.
Qualifications and Experience
- High School diploma or NZ NCEA Level 2 certification (minimum 60 credits) or equivalent.
- At least 8 years of relevant industry experience, with a minimum of 5 years in aviation or aerospace manufacturing.
- Proven expertise in managing resources to increase production rates.
- Demonstrated capability in developing leadership and managing direct reports.
- Track record of implementing process improvements and enhancing operational efficiency.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in work.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Competent in interpreting and following manufacturing instructions and technical drawings.
- Preferred: flexibility to work extended hours and weekends, and the physical ability to perform hands-on tasks in a manufacturing environment.
