Position overview
The Sub-Librarian will oversee activities in the Main Library Client Services area and will report to the Deputy Librarian for Academic Support and Operations. The role focuses on delivering specialised information, reference, and resource support to staff and students, while contributing to the university’s teaching and learning, research, innovation, community engagement, and industrialisation priorities.
Qualifications and experience
Applicants should meet one of the following academic routes:
- A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science together with a bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science.
- A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, plus any other bachelor’s degree, combined with a Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Science.
In addition, candidates must have at least three years of post-qualification experience in a university library, preferably at Assistant Librarian or Senior Assistant Librarian level.
Skills and competencies
- Working knowledge of Education 5.0 and how it shapes library service delivery.
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation abilities.
- Proven leadership, supervision, and dispute-handling capability, with the ability to mentor junior staff.
- Comfort with modern and emerging library systems, including electronic resource management tools.
Duties and responsibilities
- Support the creation, implementation, and review of library policies, SOPs, and quality manuals.
- Plan, update, and evaluate physical and digital collections in line with university programmes, including acquisition and withdrawal of materials.
- Deliver advanced reference assistance and research support to students and staff.
- Prepare and conduct information literacy sessions, citation and reference-management training, and advise on copyright, fair use, and academic honesty.
- Manage daily operations in the Main Library Client Services section, including circulation desk activities and interlibrary loan services, while sustaining a quiet and effective study space.
- Recommend and introduce relevant library technologies and electronic resource management solutions to improve user experience.
- Identify operational risks, strengthen internal controls, and ensure compliance with library policies and SOPs.
- Take part in library orientation, outreach, and community engagement activities.
