Role overview
WestJet is hiring a student data science contributor for a 12-month term starting August 31, 2026. This position is based in Calgary, Alberta, and requires in-person collaboration up to five days per week. The arrangement may change depending on business needs.
The selected student will work closely with a designated mentor and the broader team to help improve business growth and agility through secure, data-driven support for WestJet users and technology functions. The role offers hands-on learning in data science methods, including practical application of industry-leading techniques, and provides opportunities to analyze key technology metrics and recommend improvements across technology programs and forums.

Key deliverables
- Examine large and complex datasets to uncover patterns, trends, and business opportunities that can support operational and commercial decisions.
- Help develop, test, and assess machine learning, statistical, and AI models with support from experienced data scientists.
- Create reusable analytical data products that enable predictive and prescriptive analytics work.
- Partner with teams across the business to define problems and turn them into analytical solutions and experiments.
- Prepare dashboards and presentations that clearly explain insights and model results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Assist with experimentation, model tracking, and ongoing improvement by measuring results and suggesting enhancements.
- Follow data science best practices, documentation expectations, and responsible AI principles while contributing to a collaborative, innovative team.
Experience and qualifications
- Current enrolment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Operations Research, or another quantitative discipline.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, including comfort working with both structured and unstructured data.
- Working knowledge of SQL and Python, along with experience querying relational databases.
- Familiarity with machine learning topics such as regression, classification, clustering, forecasting, and model evaluation.
- Experience with visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau is an advantage.
- Awareness of cloud analytics platforms such as Azure, Snowflake, Databricks, or similar tools is an asset.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Professional judgment, discretion, and respect for confidentiality when handling sensitive data.
