Job description
About WestJet
WestJet began operating in 1996 and has grown into one of Canada’s most respected and admired corporate cultures. The company is focused on delivering strong service and high standards while helping enrich the lives of guests, communities, and team members.
WestJet’s next initial Flight Dispatcher training class is planned for September 2026.
This role involves in-person collaboration up to five days each week, and the arrangement may be adjusted depending on business needs.
Role overview
WestJet is looking for a careful, safety-minded Flight Dispatcher to support the operational control of flights in partnership with the Pilot in Command. The role supports a broad network operated with De Havilland Dash 8-400, Boeing 737NG, 737-MAX, and 787 aircraft. It suits someone who performs well in a busy, high-responsibility environment and values operational precision.
The operation runs around the clock, every day of the year. Team members in this position should be prepared to work days, evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, and statutory holidays.
Key duties
- Share operational control of flights with the Pilot in Command while following Canadian and international rules, as well as WestJet procedures.
- Review and interpret operational data such as weather, NOTAMs, airport and runway conditions, navigation aids, communication systems, and route constraints.
- Plan flights by evaluating routes, estimating fuel needs, and creating, approving, or updating operational flight plans.
- Submit and update flight plans with the relevant air traffic control organizations.
- Monitor flights continuously within the assigned operating sector.
- Deliver thorough briefings to flight crew.
- Work with Maintenance Control on aircraft MEL items and maintenance restrictions.
- Arrange airport curfew extension approvals with local airport authorities when needed.
- Escalate irregular operations to the Lead Flight Dispatcher and Commercial Operations, including suggested delays or cancellations.
What WestJet is looking for
Candidates must have completed the Transport Canada Flight Dispatch Generic Examinations (FDOPS and FDMET) and hold a Radio Telephone Restricted Operator Certificate – Aeronautical (ROC-A). Applicants must also be at least 21 years old, as required by Transport Canada.
Experience dispatching under a CARS 705 Type A or B operational control system for one year is preferred. Background in a Flight Operations team is considered an asset. Additional advantages include an FAA Dispatch License, a Commercial Pilot License, or experience as a Flight Service Specialist.
The ideal candidate will be highly organized, able to manage several tasks in a fast-moving setting, comfortable working on their own with limited supervision, and capable of communicating clearly and professionally. Strong interpersonal ability, solid computer skills, and a proactive, solution-focused mindset are also important.
Benefits
WestJet offers a competitive total rewards package. Team members also receive travel privileges for themselves and their families starting on day one, along with flexible savings and benefits programs designed to suit individual needs.
The company also promotes a collaborative and upbeat workplace where colleagues work together toward shared success.
Safety and employment conditions
Safety and security are core responsibilities for all WestJet team members. This role is considered safety-sensitive, so selected candidates must pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test in line with WestJet’s Alcohol and Drug Policy.
Diversity, equity, inclusion and accommodation
WestJet encourages people with a wide range of skills, experiences, and backgrounds to apply, even if they do not meet every listed qualification. The company is committed to fairness, accessibility, and inclusive hiring. Applicants who need accommodation at any stage of the process can contact the Talent Acquisition team at talent@westjet.com.
Application process and other notes
Applicants will receive status updates on their application, though only shortlisted candidates will be contacted with next steps. If this role is not the right match, WestJet encourages interest in future openings. Applicants may also request withdrawal of their application or deletion of personal information by contacting talent@westjet.com.
