Job description
Role overview
The City of Victoria’s Engineering & Public Works department is hiring a Street Cleaning Operator to help keep streets, sidewalks, bus shelters, and public spaces clean and safe. This position involves operating street-cleaning vehicles and equipment, handling refuse collection, and supporting general cleanliness and maintenance across the city.
Key duties
- Drive and operate street-cleaning machinery and trucks, including sidewalk sweepers, refuse packers, and a crane used to empty litter containers.
- Clean streets, sidewalks, and bus shelters; collect refuse; and remove debris from sweepers by shovelling and loading materials as needed.
- Use hand and power tools such as pressure washers, backpack blowers, brooms, and rakes to clean sidewalks and public areas.
- Remove graffiti using approved cleaners and chemicals, and replace damaged concrete litter bins when required.
- Help clear snow and ice by shovelling or applying ice-melting chemicals.
- Carry out basic upkeep on vehicles and equipment, including washing, cleaning, and checking fluid levels, belts, hoses, and lights before and after trips.
- Record maintenance issues, damages, and repair needs, and report them to the supervisor and mechanic shop.
- Check first aid and safety gear, complete daily equipment logs, and submit time sheets accurately.
- Respond to urgent or unscheduled issues such as gravel, cement, or oil spills; pick up dead animals from roads or beaches; and support traffic control when necessary.
- Report damage to city property such as potholes, broken castings, sign posts, meter posts, and graffiti, and keep sweep records on the master street map.
- Carry out other related work when qualified.
Working arrangements and conditions
The role follows a Monday to Sunday schedule with a 40-hour work week and is continuous in nature. Work is performed either on a route basis or as assigned by a supervisor, and changes in route or priority are directed to supervision.
This job involves regular physical effort, including lifting and moving heavy materials and equipment, sitting in awkward positions while operating machinery, and spending time confined to a vehicle cab. It also requires short bursts of intense concentration while driving and manoeuvring equipment.
You will work outdoors in all weather conditions and may regularly encounter abusive behaviour, unpleasant odours, dust, noise, waste, and potentially hazardous materials. There may also be occasional work close to moving traffic.
