The City of Victoria, BC is hiring a Street Cleaning Operator to handle the cleaning of streets, sidewalks, bus shelters, and related public areas, along with the collection and disposal of refuse. This is a continuous full-time role within Engineering & Public Works.

Duties and responsibilities

You will operate street cleaning vehicles and related equipment to support municipal cleanliness and public safety, and you will also perform route-based refuse collection and equipment upkeep.

  • Use sidewalk sweepers, street sweepers, trucks, and similar equipment to clean streets, sidewalks, and bus shelters.
  • Run a crane to empty litter containers, and operate refuse packers on assigned routes to collect and dispose of waste.
  • Shovel and load debris from sweepers as needed.
  • Use hand and power tools such as pressure washers, backpack blowers, brooms, and rakes to clean public surfaces.
  • Remove graffiti using appropriate cleaners and chemicals.
  • Take out and replace damaged concrete litter tubs.
  • Clear snow and ice by shovelling or applying ice-melting chemicals when required.
  • Carry out basic maintenance tasks, including washing equipment and vehicles inside and out.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip checks by reviewing fluid levels, belts, hoses, lights, and other standard items.
  • Report vehicle damage and repair needs to the supervisor and mechanic shop.
  • Check first aid and safety equipment and complete daily equipment logs and timesheets.
  • Respond to urgent or unplanned calls such as gravel, cement, or oil spills.
  • Collect dead animals from roads or beaches when required.
  • Assist with traffic control as needed.
  • Report damage to City property, including potholes, broken castings, sign posts, and meter posts, as well as graffiti.
  • Keep an accurate record of all swept areas on the master street map.
  • Carry out other related work when qualified.

This position involves a mix of physical, mental, and environmental demands.

  • Frequent lifting and moving of heavy materials and equipment.
  • Regular work in awkward seated positions while operating equipment.
  • Frequent time spent confined within a vehicle cab.
  • Short bursts of high concentration while operating equipment and manoeuvring vehicles.
  • Normal visual and auditory demands.
  • Frequent outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to potentially abusive individuals.
  • Occasional work near moving traffic.
  • Frequent exposure to unpleasant odours, dust, noise, waste products, and potentially hazardous materials.

  • Ability to operate street cleaning machinery, packers, pressure washers, single-axle trucks, and small hand tools.

Qualifications

Applicants should have Grade 10 education, a current and valid BC Class 5 driver's licence, and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
