Job description

Role overview

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is seeking Band 5 Staff Nurses to join the Transitional Care Unit, working closely with the Neonatal Unit. The neonatal service has 12 beds. This post focuses on delivering safe, effective, family-centred support for newborn babies who need extra observation and low-dependency care, helping mothers and babies stay together whenever it is clinically appropriate.

What you will do

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, deliver, and review care. The role includes supporting infant feeding, encouraging strong parent-infant attachment, and escalating any clinical concerns without delay. You will also help ensure smooth continuity of care across maternity, transitional care, and neonatal services.

Main duties

  • Provide evidence-based, safe care for babies in transitional care with support from the postnatal ward and neonatal unit.
  • Observe and assess infants closely, and act promptly if signs of deterioration appear.
  • Encourage and support infant feeding, including breastfeeding and responsive feeding approaches.
  • Promote bonding between parents and babies, and educate families so they feel confident caring for their child.
  • Collaborate with the wider clinical team to deliver coordinated, family-focused care.
  • Keep clinical records accurate, complete, and up to date.
  • Follow local policies, clinical guidance, and infection prevention requirements.
  • Help coordinate shifts where needed and contribute to the wider maternity and neonatal workforce.
  • Take part in ongoing learning, development, and neonatal training opportunities.

Development and team culture

This position suits a nurse or midwife who is interested in neonatal practice and wants room to grow their skills. The trust’s long-term strategy for 2023 to 2030 is built around four priorities: delivering high-quality care for everyone, being a great place to work, building impactful partnerships, and achieving excellence in research and education. The organisation also aims to reduce unfair differences in healthcare access and outcomes by working closely with communities. Its values are to be compassionate, proud, inclusive, and one team.

About the trust

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is committed to making a greater difference for the people it serves. This is presented as an important time for the organisation as it strengthens what it does well and focuses on areas where further progress is needed.
