Job description

Company overview

Turf and Drainage focuses on building and maintaining sports fields and drainage systems, with an emphasis on delivering dependable, high-quality playing surfaces across a range of sporting codes. The business also completes civil construction work of different scales, backed by a modern machinery fleet and experienced operators. From initial site preparation through to the final finish, the team oversees every stage with an eye on safety, efficiency, and long-term durability. The role works closely with clients, councils, and contractors to provide practical solutions for sports and civil infrastructure.

Role summary

This is a full-time, on-site position in Auckland for a Sports Surfaces Specialist. The job centres on constructing, maintaining, and improving natural and synthetic sports fields. The work includes preparing sites, installing turf, carrying out drainage and irrigation tasks, repairing surfaces, and performing routine field upkeep. You will also be expected to operate and look after relevant plant and equipment, follow project plans and safety processes, and coordinate with supervisors and teammates so work is completed on time.

Key duties

The position includes hands-on field and site work, quality-focused checks, measurements, and reporting to confirm that finished surfaces meet required performance and compliance standards. Regular communication with project managers, clients, and subcontractors is part of the role to keep projects moving smoothly and to resolve issues quickly.

Skills and background

Successful candidates should bring practical experience in sports field construction, turf maintenance, or groundskeeping, with working knowledge of both natural and synthetic playing surfaces. Experience in drainage, earthworks, or civil construction is also valuable, particularly in site preparation, trenching, and installing pipes or similar infrastructure. A solid understanding of workplace health and safety, the ability to operate and maintain machinery such as tractors, mowers, excavators, and rollers, and the physical capacity for outdoor manual work are all important.

Additional requirements

Good communication, teamwork, and a dependable, proactive approach are essential. You will need basic numeracy and measurement ability for layout, levels, and field markings, along with attention to detail to achieve a quality finish. A relevant trade qualification, turf management certificate, or experience in landscaping, sports turf, or civil construction would be an advantage. A valid driver’s licence is required, and extra machinery or operator tickets such as excavator or roller credentials are beneficial.
