Specialist/Senior Specialist, Communications

About the Role

Join American Airlines' Global Engagement team as a Specialist or Senior Specialist in Communications, where you will support the airline's operations, especially focusing on the Safety Department and Integrated Operations Center. This role involves crafting strategic communication plans that effectively narrate the airline's operational activities and major business decisions to a variety of audiences, including team members, customers, the media, and the public.

Key Responsibilities

• Create engaging communication strategies to inform internal and external stakeholders about operational matters and significant business updates.
• Work cross-functionally with departments to ensure safety-related messages reach employees throughout the system.
• Develop innovative storytelling methods to share the airline's operational narrative internally and with media outlets.
• Manage multiple communication channels to effectively reach frontline employees, leadership, support staff, customers, media, and the general public.
• Prepare communication strategies during high traffic periods such as summer and holiday travel seasons to highlight American Airlines' preparedness and operational capabilities.
• Assist senior operational leaders with media interview preparations and speechwriting.
• Maintain strong internal relationships to support the Global Engagement team's integrity and mission.
• Contribute to media response efforts and participate in "on call" duties occasionally throughout the year.
• Travel intermittently to airport locations and other key operational sites to support events and narrative-building opportunities.

Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor's degree or comparable experience required.
• Minimum of 3 years experience in communications; 5 years preferred, especially in corporate communications or media relations for multinational organizations or agencies.
• Basic knowledge of aviation and airline industry is desirable.
• Exceptional writing and editing capabilities.
• Ability to effectively multitask and excel in a dynamic 24/7 environment.
• Strong critical thinking, investigative skills, and a meticulous, no-surprise work style.
• Excellent collaboration skills and ability to engage with various organizational levels.
• Proficient analytical and quantitative abilities, detail-oriented with a solution-focused mindset.
• Experience handling sensitive information with discretion, comfortable working with leadership.
• Skilled team player able to thrive across all hierarchies.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
