About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly Cellular Pathology department at Torbay Hospital, located on the beautiful South Devon Coast. We are seeking a qualified and experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist. Applications from Biomedical Scientists currently undertaking or part-way through their specialist portfolio will also be considered; they will commence on an Annex U basis until successful completion of their portfolio.

The department processes approximately 21,000 diagnostic requests annually, performing a variety of histological procedures. This role is crucial for patient management by providing diagnoses from tissue samples. The department utilizes the Beaker LIMS system and the Roche Vantage Tracking system.

The successful candidate will be dedicated, dynamic, a team player, and possess strong organizational skills. The primary focus will be providing technical expertise within the department.

The department operates core hours from 08:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Torbay Hospital is situated in the English Riviera, an area of outstanding natural beauty, close to prime beaches and Dartmoor National Park.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake a full range of duties within the Histology Department, including specimen dissection/loading, embedding, microtomy, special stains, and immunohistochemistry (IHC).
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures and contribute to the implementation of improved or best practices.
  • Ensure all work complies with the laboratory's quality management system.
  • Manage laboratory procedural and other records effectively.
  • Maintain laboratory assets and analysers.
  • Support the resolution of corrective and preventative actions.

Workload and Departmental Information

The Cellular Pathology Department handles a total annual workload of 21,000 surgical requests. Additionally, it performs 100 frozen sections, 75 skin immunofluorescence tests, and 11,000 immunocytochemistry tests. Diagnostic Cytology receives approximately 1,000 requests per year.
