This role focuses on leading the council’s social media activity across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn, while creating content that informs the public, encourages engagement and strengthens trust within the community.

The position is varied and hands-on. You may be producing video for a community event one day, analysing social media performance the next, shaping strategy and policy, coaching colleagues on best practice, developing campaign material, or helping manage emerging online issues.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and deliver social media approaches that improve the council’s online visibility and deepen community connection.
  • Develop content for multiple platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok.
  • Write and produce strong copy, visuals and multimedia assets that reflect the council’s voice and brand.
  • Engage with the public online and respond to questions and comments in a constructive way.
  • Track performance data and use analytics to refine content and increase impact.
  • Help manage misinformation, online issues and reputation risks through proactive monitoring and response.
  • Guide and support other teams across the council on social media use, guidelines and brand alignment.

About You

You are a creative communicator who knows how to tell stories that resonate with different audiences. You understand how to build engagement through tailored content and thoughtful platform use.

  • You bring solid experience managing multiple social channels and producing digital content that performs well.
  • You are comfortable creating content in written, visual and video formats.
  • You have excellent writing and editing abilities, with the skill to adapt tone and messaging for different audiences and platforms.
  • You stay current with new tools, trends and best practices in social media.
  • You know how to work with management and analytics tools to measure success and improve results.
  • You enjoy collaborating with people across a large organisation and building effective working relationships.
  • You use good judgement, creativity and initiative when working through sensitive or complex situations.
  • You understand social media audiences and the differences between platforms.
  • You can demonstrate awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a commitment to including te ao Māori perspectives in your work.

Qualifications and Experience

A qualification in communications, marketing or a related discipline is preferred. Experience in local government or the public sector would be beneficial.
