Job description

Role overview

Hutt City Council is looking for a Senior Information Advisor (Official Information) to join its legal team in Lower Hutt, Wellington. This position supports the council’s responsibilities under the Local Government Official Information Act (LGOIMA) and the Privacy Act, while helping strengthen openness, accountability, and informed public participation in local government decision-making.

In this role, you will work across the organisation to support the proper release of official information, provide guidance on privacy and information-handling obligations, and help improve awareness of these responsibilities throughout council.

Key work areas

  • Coordinate the handling of official information requests from start to finish.
  • Prepare and draft responses to information requests.
  • Advise on the correct application of official information and privacy rules and good practice.
  • Help build understanding of information obligations through training, guidance, and advice.
  • Track, monitor, and report on information release activity.

What the role needs from you

This opportunity will suit someone with experience managing requests for information and a strong focus on policy, process, and best-practice decision-making around release of official information. It may also appeal to candidates with a solid understanding of government systems and experience in ministerial services or a comparable environment.

You’ll need to recognise the importance of identifying the right information and releasing it appropriately, along with strong attention to detail. The role also calls for excellent research ability, timely and well-considered information management, and a commitment to helping the organisation continuously improve awareness of its official information and privacy duties.

You will work closely with the Chief Legal Officer and the Privacy Officer, so the ability to build effective working relationships is essential. The council will also value a planned and organised way of working, strong communication skills, and confidence in dealing with a wide range of stakeholders including internal teams, members of the public, and vendors.
