Job description

Overview

Western Care Association works to provide the right support, in the right setting, for the people it serves. The organisation is expanding its team across County Mayo and is currently seeking a Social Care Assistant for residential services in Ballina.

This is a role within a progressive service focused on helping people live the lives they choose.

Role details

  • Contract type: specific purpose.
  • Weekly hours: 29.83 hours, plus sleep-in duties.

About the role

The successful candidate will help individuals lead meaningful, fulfilling lives in a safe, inclusive and respectful environment. You will work closely with individuals, their families and multidisciplinary teams to support independence, equality and personal goal achievement. The role also includes advocacy, supporting individual preferences and rights, and contributing to the creation and delivery of Individual Plans.

Key duties

  • Take part in local service planning and help shape services to meet changing needs.
  • Provide personal care and practical day-to-day support where required.
  • Maintain a safe, dignified workplace and follow health, safety and dignity-at-work standards.
  • Promote safe practice across all environments in line with organisational guidance.
  • Use positive, proactive approaches when supporting people with challenging behaviour, in line with policy and best practice.

Experience of working in a person- and family-centred way is important, as is a strong appreciation of equality, inclusion and quality of life. The ideal candidate will be able to listen carefully, advocate respectfully, collaborate well with others and bring energy, flexibility and a solutions-focused mindset.

Experience supporting people with high or complex needs is desirable, along with leadership or supervisory experience, involvement in service improvement, awareness of budgeting and financial accountability, and familiarity with IT systems. Knowledge of New Directions standards is useful, and understanding of HIQA standards and regulations is preferred.

Qualifications and experience

Formal qualifications are not required for this position. However, candidates must show the personal qualities needed for the role, including compassion, reliability, patience and a genuine commitment to the wellbeing of others. Previous experience is desirable.

Other requirements

  • A full driving licence is essential.
  • All applicants will need to complete Irish Garda vetting and reference checks.
  • Applicants from outside the EU must include valid permission to work in the Republic of Ireland with their application.
  • Anyone who has lived outside the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland for more than six months since the age of 16 must provide overseas police clearance.

Pay

The salary scale for this position is €32,542 to €45,161 per annum, with an hourly rate from €15.99 to €22.19 based on a 39-hour full-time working week.
