Role summary

The Signage Asset Engineer for Roads O&M will be responsible for managing the full asset lifecycle of highway traffic signage in Doha. The position focuses on keeping signs safe, compliant, visible, serviceable, and cost-efficient across the road network.

The scope includes regulatory, warning, directional, guide, and informational signs, as well as ground-mounted units, cantilever and gantry-mounted structures, overhead installations, and their related supports.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee the management of highway signage assets, including all major sign types, overhead structures, foundations, and support systems.
  • Confirm that all signage work aligns with applicable standards, project specifications, contractual obligations, MUTCD guidance, ASTM requirements, local authority rules, and accepted international practices.
  • Create and maintain detailed asset registers in the Asset Management System, capturing data such as sign type, dimensions, materials, support configuration, age, condition, retroreflective performance, and maintenance records.
  • Define inspection criteria, condition rating methods, and performance indicators for signs and their supporting structures.
  • Plan and supervise inspections covering structural condition, visibility, readability, retroreflectivity, chromaticity, physical damage, corrosion, deformation, and foundation soundness.
  • Review condition and inspection findings to identify performance trends, deterioration patterns, failure exposure, and lifecycle needs.
  • Design and apply preventive and corrective maintenance approaches that improve safety, compliance, service performance, and long-term value.
  • Build rehabilitation and replacement plans for deteriorated or non-compliant assets using condition, safety, criticality, retroreflectivity, and lifecycle cost data.
  • Track retroreflective sheeting performance and verify compliance with minimum reflectivity and chromaticity requirements.
  • Assess fabrication methods, materials, installation quality, and workmanship against approved standards and specifications.
  • Coordinate repairs and rehabilitation for signs and structures that are damaged, faded, corroded, out of alignment, or structurally weak.
  • Lead inspection and maintenance teams during routine, reactive, and detailed work activities.
  • Handle defect identification, ranking, and corrective action tracking in line with KPIs, SLAs, and road safety priorities.
  • Work closely with traffic, roadway, pavement, structural, and road safety teams to support integrated asset planning and maintenance delivery.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including condition reports, lifecycle forecasts, compliance reports, maintenance plans, and investment recommendations.
  • Support and coach junior engineers, inspectors, and maintenance staff with technical guidance.
  • Keep current with developments in signage materials, retroreflective technology, maintenance methods, and industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in highway operations and maintenance, including direct work with traffic signage asset management and upkeep.
  • Strong familiarity with traffic sign standards and specifications, including MUTCD, relevant ASTM standards, highway signage design and maintenance practices, and road authority requirements.
  • Solid understanding of retroreflectivity measurement, chromaticity compliance, sign visibility, legibility, and deterioration behavior over time.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication, installation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of ground-mounted signs, gantry and cantilever structures, large directional and guide signs, and supporting foundations.
  • Knowledge of inspection methods and condition assessment techniques for signage assets and overhead structures.
  • Experience using Asset Management Systems, inspection databases, and maintenance management platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, especially in interpreting condition data and creating risk-based maintenance and replacement plans.
  • Understanding of structural concerns and corrosion-related issues affecting sign supports and overhead systems.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to manage several asset groups at once.
  • Clear communication skills, including technical report writing and stakeholder presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Qatar for inspections, audits, and urgent response work.
