Job Overview

The Recruiting Sergeant at Allendale Correctional Institution serves as the lead individual responsible for correctional officer recruitment within the facility. This role manages the recruitment process from initial applicant interaction through onboarding, ensuring that the institution meets its staffing needs with qualified candidates who satisfy agency policies and security standards.

Key Duties

  • Engage applicants promptly and provide transparent information about the correctional officer role and hiring procedures.
  • Evaluate applications to verify eligibility and assist candidates through the entire application process.
  • Conduct candidate interviews, assess qualifications, and coordinate further interviews with the Warden.
  • Manage all aspects of pre-employment processes, including administering tests, carrying out background investigations, and facilitating medical screenings.
  • Oversee orientation sessions for new hires, issue necessary equipment, and arrange initial job shadowing experiences.
  • Maintain detailed applicant records, track progress throughout recruitment stages, and report hiring trends to senior management.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources, training personnel, and leadership to align recruitment with institutional staffing requirements.

Training Requirement

Successful completion of eight weeks of South Carolina Department of Corrections Basic Training is mandatory upon hiring.

Qualification Criteria

  • Possession of a high school diploma coupled with at least eighteen months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
  • A bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field can substitute for half of the required experience.
  • Certification by the SCDC Training Academy and completion of the basic supervisory course within six months of entering the position are required.
