Senior Staff Nurse - OPD

Role overview

This position is responsible for overseeing the clinical side of the clinic, making sure patient care is well coordinated and that patient movement through the clinic remains efficient, safe, and aligned with hospital policies and procedures. The role works in close partnership with the Patient Relations Supervisor and the Director of the Satellite Clinic.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver nursing care that is tailored to the patient’s age and current condition, using the nursing process as the basis for care.
• Carry out focused, age-appropriate patient assessments and continuously evaluate the physical and psychological needs of patients and their families.
• Include patients, relatives or significant others, and other healthcare professionals in care planning when needed.
• Work with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate treatment and support patient care delivery.
• Plan, prioritize, and adjust care pathways based on each patient’s needs, including arranging transfers when required.
• Stay alert to subtle changes in patient condition to identify possible complications early.
• Record all important information in the medical record in line with hospital and department documentation standards.
• Ensure essential supplies and equipment are available and properly maintained for the unit and patient care needs.
• Complete clerical tasks whenever required.
• Take responsibility for required JCIA mandatory learning, including areas such as fire safety, infection control, and other compulsory topics.
• Keep staff nurse competencies and life support certifications current.
• Attend team meetings and participate in unit committees and projects.
• Contribute to unit planning and help the team achieve its goals.
• Support a safe environment for both patients and staff.
• Handle narcotic, controlled, and semi-controlled medicines safely and document them according to policy.
• Ensure unit competencies, such as pain management and use of emergency department devices, are completed.
• Maintain professional competence through current research and accepted standards of practice.
• Complete annual basic critical care nursing competencies.
• Participate in unit-based continuous quality improvement work, including data collection, incident reporting, complaint reporting, medication error reporting, and related CQI activities.
• Take part in ongoing learning and keep all mandatory education up to date.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Support staff nurses and care assistants in planning, delivering, and reviewing direct patient care in the satellite clinic setting.
• Maintain accurate nursing records in accordance with hospital policy.
• Collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare professionals to improve outcomes.
• Encourage reporting of incidents, complaints, and patient satisfaction survey feedback to enhance care quality.
• Help maintain a welcoming, secure, and supportive environment for patients, families, and staff.
• Keep communication flowing between patients, nurses, and physicians regarding follow-up care and instructions.
• Maintain up-to-date service-specific competencies as required by guidelines.
• Provide guidance and oversight to nursing staff on patient inquiries.
• Support clinic KPI audits and related data tracking, including nursing documentation review, timely CRM closure, Press Ganey follow-up, and complaint management.
• Ensure nursing pre-screening is completed 48 hours before scheduled appointments.
• Confirm that quality rounds and the quality checklist are consistently completed; where gaps are found, ensure corrective action plans are created and followed through.
• Submit monthly environmental rounds audit reports and track corrective actions for any issues found.
• Monitor clinic inventory to keep stock at the required par level and work with Materials Management to reduce slow-moving and non-moving items.
• Advise Patient Relations Executive staff on patient-related queries.
• Prepare nursing clinical slides for inclusion in the monthly Quality Improvement meeting.
• Follow up on approved tests that have not yet been used and make sure they are scheduled.
• Work with the insurance coordinator to resolve pending approvals and keep patients informed of status updates.
• Coordinate with the OR coordinator and patients regarding surgeries to be scheduled, as applicable.
• Liaise with Patient Business Services and Revenue Cycle Management when procedures require additional discounts.
• Prevent patient walkouts in the clinic through active coordination and follow-up.
• Close safe points promptly, ensure issues are addressed, and support root cause analysis.
• Ensure all clinical KPIs are updated monthly on the Patient Safety Data Board.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with a minimum three-year full-time program, or
• A Nursing degree with a minimum two-year program plus Registered Nurse registration from Canada, the USA, the UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia.
• UAE nationals graduating from UAE or non-UAE institutions are exempt from the experience and clinical training requirements for the applied title, provided they submit a copy of their birth certificate and the mother’s family book.
• Non-UAE nationals who graduated from UAE universities must complete six months of clinical training after graduation in an APS health facility, except for Registered Nurse and Assistant Nurse titles.
• A valid license or registration to practice in the home country and/or the country of last employment, where applicable.
• A current Basic Life Support certification, or another certification as required for the scope of practice.

Professional experience

• Three to five years of recent post-graduate nursing experience is required.
• Prior experience as a Team Leader or Senior Registered Nurse is considered an advantage.
• Applicants should be able to deliver care suited to patient age, developmental stage, and clinical needs.
• Strong assessment skills are needed to evaluate the physical and psychological needs of patients and their families.
• Ability to coordinate and prioritize patient care based on individual needs is essential.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is mandatory.
