Senior Research Horticulturist

Role overview

This position sits within Plant Industries at the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Katherine, Northern Territory. The role is responsible for directing and coordinating horticultural research, development and extension initiatives that strengthen productivity, profitability, sustainability and resilience across the Territory’s horticulture sector.

Primary purpose

The successful candidate will work across the Darwin, Katherine/Daly and Alice Springs regions, partnering with internal leadership, growers, industry bodies and research collaborators to identify new opportunities, attract investment and turn scientific findings into practical solutions that support industry expansion.

Key responsibilities

• Design, lead and manage innovative horticultural research and extension programs.
• Develop practical science-based approaches that improve industry performance and resilience.
• Collaborate closely with Plant Industries leadership, external stakeholders and research partners.
• Spot emerging opportunities and help secure investment for priority projects.
• Support the growth of horticulture across the Darwin, Katherine/Daly and Alice Springs regions.
