Role overview

The hiring company is seeking a senior-level payroll professional to manage payroll operations in Germany from its Berlin office. The position suits someone who is highly detail-focused, comfortable working with numbers, and committed to keeping payroll processing accurate, compliant, and on schedule. The role also involves close coordination with employees, HR, Finance, and external service providers.

Key responsibilities

  • Run payroll for employees in Germany end to end, making sure pay, benefits, pension contributions, and allowances are processed correctly and within required deadlines.
  • Match payroll-related tax and social security deductions, then ensure reporting and payments are completed on time.
  • Coordinate employee life-cycle cases such as long-term sickness, maternity or parental leave, and holiday settlements together with HR colleagues.
  • Check and approve payroll data received from external providers, including updates for employee changes, absences, and exits.
  • Review payroll data for accuracy and extract useful insights for internal stakeholders, including Finance.
  • Handle payroll questions through the internal ticketing system and respond in a timely, professional manner.
  • Audit payroll output reports to confirm they are correct and fully compliant with instructions.

Requirements

  • Several years of practical payroll experience in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment.
  • Strong ability to work with different stakeholders and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency, including pivot tables and VLOOKUP.
  • Hands-on experience using DATEV payroll software.
  • Excellent attention to detail, along with strong analytical and numerical thinking.
  • Ability to review and audit data carefully, spot inconsistencies, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Fluency in both German and English.
