About Gradiant

Gradiant is a water company distinguished by its innovative and proprietary comprehensive solutions for advanced water and wastewater treatment. Serving vital sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, lithium and critical minerals, and renewable energy, Gradiant’s solutions focus on optimizing water use, minimizing discharge, reclaiming resources, and converting wastewater into freshwater. Founded at MIT and headquartered in Boston, the company employs over 1,400 professionals globally.

Role Overview

The Senior New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer will be instrumental in developing, validating, and scaling PFAS-related water treatment technologies. This hands-on position involves conducting laboratory experiments, pilot testing, and data-driven refinements while managing project implementation. The engineer will oversee the technology transition from bench-scale to pilot and commercial application, integrating fundamental process knowledge with practical engineering execution. The role also requires coordinating efforts among internal teams, vendors, and customers to ensure the success of pilot and demonstration initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish process design criteria, technical specifications, operating parameters, and performance claims.
  • Standardize and maintain process design documentation, calculation approaches, and engineering tools.
  • Enhance internal tools for process design and equipment dimensioning.
  • Plan and conduct experiments, constructing and managing bench and pilot-scale systems for proof-of-concept and validation.
  • Lead the design, assembly, commissioning, and troubleshooting of pilot-scale systems.
  • Perform technical risk evaluations including hazard assessments (e.g., HAZOP), identifying failure modes and controls.
  • Create control philosophies and work with PLC programmers to develop system automation narratives.
  • Coordinate engineering contributions for general arrangement drawings, layouts, and 3D models.
  • Ensure technical outputs are precise, consistent, and aligned with verified performance data.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to convert R&D findings into standardized, scalable designs.
  • Develop commissioning, acceptance protocols, troubleshooting procedures, and field readiness standards.
  • Provide on-site support during commissioning and pilot trials as needed.
  • Integrate field insights into design refinements, tool upgrades, and engineering standards revisions.
  • Work with commercial teams to embed operational feedback into design improvements.
  • Implement NPI project plans detailing scope, milestones, and resource allocation.
  • Assist proposal and manufacturing teams with costing analyses and the preparation of budgetary and technical proposals for solution offerings.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Possess a Bachelor's, Master’s, or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Have between three and seven years of pertinent experience within the water sector, ideally in EPC, OEM, or water technology/solutions enterprises.
  • Demonstrate experience or familiarity with industrial wastewater treatment operations.
  • Hands-on involvement in leading or supporting bench-scale or pilot-scale system operations including commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in process design tasks such as mass balance, equipment sizing, and cost analysis.
  • Skilled in preparing engineering documentation, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment and instrument lists, and General Arrangement (GA) drawings.
  • Experience with process simulation or design tools such as Aspen, WAVE, IMS Design, OLI, or equivalents is advantageous.
  • Exposure to scaling technologies from laboratory or pilot to industrial scale is preferred.
  • Strong analytical aptitude, problem-solving capabilities, and project coordination skills with effectiveness in cross-functional team environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate technical information effectively to diverse stakeholders.
