Role Overview
This leadership role is created for a Senior Manager in Safety, Health, Environment, and Security (SHE&S) within downstream operations, based in Canada. You will be instrumental in shaping and driving SHE&S strategies, serving as a key advisor to senior leadership by integrating risk management and safety priorities into business operations. The position requires providing strategic guidance, technical advice, and coaching to operational teams to promote continuous improvement in safety culture across complex, geographically diverse environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide and mentor SHE&S professionals by setting clear goals and performance standards.
- Collaborate with operational leaders to pinpoint emerging risks and embed SHE&S into business planning.
- Develop governance structures, establish performance indicators, and manage assurance processes to uplift SHE&S performance.
- Maintain compliance with regulations, internal guidelines, and best industry practices.
- Offer strategic expertise to enhance safety culture and operational discipline.
- Lead execution of SHE&S initiatives across various business units.
- Analyze safety data, incident trends, and audit results to find improvement areas.
- Manage major incident investigations, remedial actions, and promote organizational learning.
- Work with corporate and subject matter experts to align regional SHE&S activities with enterprise-wide objectives.
- Stay current with regulatory changes and industry best practices to refine SHE&S performance.
- Influence leaders at all levels to drive accountability and proactive risk management.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in related fields including Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Management, or Security Management, or equivalent professional experience.
- Over 10 years of progressive experience in SHE&S roles in sectors such as industrial, manufacturing, agricultural, mining, energy, logistics, or transportation operations.
- Proven track record of managing and growing SHE&S teams spread across multiple locations.
- Experience partnering with senior leadership to develop SHE&S strategies and risk mitigation plans.
- Professional certifications like CSP, CIH, CHMM, CRSP or equivalents are preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of SHE&S management systems, compliance regulations, risk assessment methodologies, incident investigation, and assurance mechanisms.
- Experience implementing and enhancing SHE&S programs at multiple sites or business units.
- Strong business insight to relate SHE&S priorities to broader operational and strategic goals.
- Excellent capabilities in communication, influencing, facilitation, and leading change.
- Ability to perform effectively in fast-paced, complex, and geographically dispersed operational settings.
- Strong analytical skills to convert data insights into practical improvements.
