Job description
Job purpose
This position is responsible for leading the organization’s legislative and legal compliance agenda. The role sets the strategic approach for understanding, interpreting, and meeting obligations under relevant laws, regulations, and legislative frameworks. It also oversees the architecture of internal legal policies and compliance governance, turning complex regulatory changes into practical guidance for executive decision-making. As the most senior authority on legislative compliance, this role helps define the organization’s legal risk profile and promotes a strong culture of accountability and compliance excellence.
Legislative strategy and policy governance
- Set the long-term direction for how laws and regulations are interpreted and applied, so the organization can prepare for regulatory change in advance rather than respond only after it happens.
- Take full ownership of the internal policy framework, guiding the creation, review, and ongoing refinement of policies and procedures to keep them aligned with legal, regulatory, and industry developments.
- Act as a senior advisor to executive leadership by converting complex legislative updates into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with government departments, regulators, and legal bodies to support credibility, collaboration, and early awareness of legal developments.
Compliance governance and legal oversight
- Design and direct the organization’s governance model for accountability and compliance, clarifying how legal responsibilities are assigned and enforced across the business.
- Work with executive and senior leaders to embed legal and regulatory obligations into strategy, organizational design, and key decisions from the start.
- Lead legislative reviews, compliance audits, and gap assessments, while establishing priorities and ensuring corrective measures are completed effectively.
- Own legal risk assessment and mitigation for non-compliance, including the organization’s approach to risk tolerance and protective controls.
- Provide senior legal input to cross-functional and enterprise-wide initiatives so compliance considerations are built into major decisions.
- Represent the organization in sensitive legal discussions, negotiations, and consultations with outside stakeholders while protecting its interests and reputation.
Compliance culture and capability building
- Define and sponsor the strategy for building legal and compliance awareness through targeted education programs for relevant audiences across the organization.
- Promote a culture where compliance and legal accountability are understood and owned by leadership and teams at every level.
- Coach and develop colleagues and team members to strengthen the function’s legal and compliance capability and grow future expertise.
- Oversee the development of clear, practical resources that keep legal and compliance knowledge accessible and embedded in everyday work.
Risk management and executive reporting
- Own enterprise-level legal risk identification and management related to legislative compliance, including assessments and mitigation plans.
- Prepare meaningful, data-informed reports for executive leadership and governance forums that highlight risk, trends, and strategic actions.
- Maintain the quality and traceability of legal records such as contracts, agreements, audit outputs, and corrective action logs.
- Set the approach for reviewing policies, controls, and accountability measures on a periodic basis, using stakeholder feedback to support continuous improvement.
- Lead assessments of compliance initiatives to determine how effective they are against business goals and legal obligations, then refine the approach as needed.
